I'm in the process of buying a custom wood BlowsMeAway mic from our pal Greg H. I'd like to get some sort of padded case or cover to keep it in to protect it. Not gonna be just chucking this one into the gig back with harps, cables, pedals, etc.

Can anyone recommend something?

I'm posting here rather than just e-mailing Greg because A) I know he'll see it here anyway, and B) I'd like as much feedback as possible.*

You could get a crown royal bag and wrap the mic in a soft hand towel of some sort before putting it in the bag. I think the purple bag would look cool especially in your harp case.

You could also throw a few mojo items in the bottom of the bag for that extra mojo...

I have a cheap metal case for my gear - like a camera case - where you can pull out sections of foam rubber to create compartments. I keep my wood mics in the blue suede pouch they come in, each in its own inset in that foam. My Ultimate 58, pedal, power supply, cables, etc all live in the same case.

What I like to use are golf club socks. They are heavily padded covers that a golfer slides over his driver and other woods. Any discount house with a Sporting Goods dept will have them,,,,Sears, Target, etc. They're like small pouches made from quilting material.

I've used them for bullet and stick mics. Slide them on the mic, toss it in your gig case. You can also just take any heavy, padded material and bring it to a shoemaker. They will make something custom-sized for just a couple of dollars. They have the right machinery for the job.

I keep mine in the small velvet bag that Greg provides with the mic but then put that into a beer koozie. That all then goes into my briefcase with my harps, pedals, cables, etc.. There's a lot of stuff around it so it doesn't move, the koozie keeps off the scratches and nicks, and the briefcase means they'd have to pry my cold dead fingers from the handle to take it away from me.

If you want a cheap head cover (golf) stop by any golf course and visit the guys in the cart barn. They have a million of them in the Lost and Found. Just ask them for a couple. They will show you a box that you can rummage through and take your pick. They will be glad to get rid of them. If you feel like tipping the guy a couple of dollars, that won't hurt and I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Thanks, guys.

Great idea, Tom. As a kid in south Florida, I grew up working at golf courses and certainly remember the overflowing lost-and-found boxes in the bag room.

I wrap mine in a handkerchief and then put in a strong small cardboard box a Japanese tea cup came in, secured with a blue rubber band.

I use a zippered bank deposit bag. The bank will give you one if you are a "good customer", or they will charge $5.00. It will hold mic and cable + bubble wrap if you choose to use it.

One great thing about the Peavey H5 and H5-C mics is the case they come in. The foam padding inside is cut out to hold both the mic, and the cable in a coiled state. But I'm planning on modifying the connection to a screw-on barrel and 1/4" adapter in place of the troublesome mini-XLR jack. Once that's done, I'm gonna get a new piece of foam and cut it so the case can carry the Cherry Bomb, my JT30, my Akai DM13, and my Retro Rocket.

One might be able to purchase an H5 case off ebay or directly from Peavey and do the same thing I have planned for any mic they wish.

LOL, AirMojo ...... an old sock was my go-to bullet case for years! I just thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade.

On eBay, I came across some inexpensive, nice looking neoprene Matin lens cases. Now I just need to figure which size would work. Auction 271023258819 ("Neoprene Matin Soft Camera Lens Pouch Case--Size: M G002") says their medium case has a diameter of 95mm and height of 130mm (usable height is 2-3cm lower than the overall height because of the drawstring closure). Reckon that would work, guys?

95mm x 130mm is about 3.74 inches by 5.11 inches.

That sounds about right--maybe a little long... the small size might work as well.. 80mm x 90mm is about 3.15 inches bu 3.54 inches... depending on the length of your GH wood mic.

Pretty inexpensive... you can always try another size later.

The best part about the little kids ankle songs is the elastic in the opening, at least on the ones that I bought (new!)... the bullet mic fits nice and tight... the thicker the sock the better!

not the cheapest solution, but I keep my two favorite mics in zippered pistol cases. I keep Gregs volume controls attached, and the pistol cases are the perfect size and shape.

Yes, pistol cases work well, if you can find the right size.

I keep my Shaker Madcat Mic (has short cord attached in a little zipper pistol case that I use to store my American Derringer (shot 45 colt or .410 shotgun shells--sold it--too hard to shoot).

I keep my stick mics in pencil cases, which I line with that dark grey foam packing material used in shipping. Just be careful that you don't scrape the mic on the zipper when taking in and out. I mostly have stick mics, but the two bullets that I have (EV 638 and EV 606) I keep in a pencil case wrapped in very small bubble wrap, the I place them in bottom to bottom so that to the bottom of one mic does not scrape the top of another. The EV stick mics like the RE-10, 635A, 660A and 631B fit very nicely in several two-pouch cases, with one end facing one way, and the other in the other way, for uniformity in storage. I have not had one problem since I started doing this 3 years ago.

My mics are industrial strength bullet proof bullets, and the scuff marks, patina and dents multiply their mojo manyfold. The only consideration is when I throw them into my case to make sure they don't damage my harps or delay pedal.

Also, as a martial artist, their potential for use in a self defense situation is not lost on me either.

Many of these mics have endured fifty or more years of being knocked about and lying around in attics and garages. I believe that many (especially the shure cm's) are at least as tough or tougher than the sm58: check this out

I wonder if I could hammer a nail in with a green bullet? (don't think I'll try, just in case)

Got my medium sized Matin lens pouch case in the mail. Seems like a quality piece and about the right size for most any bullet mic.

I won't be able to confirm that it's a good fit for my custom BlowsMeAway woodie until it arrives. Damn, the wait is a b***h.

I'll continue with the thread-hijacking - I LOVE all these videos of people demonstrating just how amazingly indestructible Shure mics are. Here's another couple. The first one contains the same 1 year in the ground test as above but shows a bunch of other attempts first....

12 gauge, magnum, #5 shot.....
