Got the chance to see and hear Sugar Blue and his great band at Kingston Mines in Chicago last Saturday night. Brandon Bailey was in town, and I met him up there and performed my usual chauffeur duties happily - Great to see you again Mr. Superchucker.

Brandon will attest to this fact: Sugar Blue was unbelievably fast that night. I have seen him play many times, but I cannot recall him playing like this. It was awesome. It is coming on the heels of the recording of his live album "Raw Sugar", coming out next week I think. Sugar Blue - right now - is on top of his game in a major way.

This review was prompted by reading about the upcoming John Popper show in Oxford, because I recall yelling to a young guy next to me after the first blistering set - "John Popper who?"

Rico McFarland was just destroying the guitar, he was stellar as well. What a great guitar player. Carlos Johnson was down the street at B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted, and he is phenomenal, one of the very best, but right now Rico has to be the best blues guitarist in Chicago outside of Buddy Guy.

Footnote: Brandon got on stage and jammed with Blue and the band. Mr. Bailey got a big response from the PACKED house. He and Blue were going back and forth, it was awesome.

I used to avoid Kingston Mines like the plague, but would've seen Sugar Blue there.

Now, B.L.U.E.S. - that was my joint. Nice and loud

Atty...you ever see Vino Louden... he was in Koko's band. After one of her shows we brought him down to a little hole in the wall blues bar JAM NIGHT and he blew the roof off...The guy would play the guitar with his tongue while looking at the girls in the crowd and freak them out lol...

Kingston Mines is still open!? cool. i like B.L.U.E.S
across the street too. i'll never forget a blistering chicken skin performance by Sammy Fender at B.L.U.E.S before going to the Mines to Jam.
