Does your new mic have a volume control?

Fingers...

"On Full" sounds like a bit much. Perhaps there a better compromise.

What kind of bullet mic are we talking about here?

If its a 520DX then I can see the feedback and screamer issues very easily. Hell, my buddy has the same problem with his Blues Junior, so I can definitely see a DeVille getting the same EQ and gain hiccup.

Huh...I'd never seen or heard of one of those before....but I like the look of it!

SilverBack Aero Harp Mic

UK model...prolly why I've never come across it before.

Well....if you like the mic and what it does, then yes, a tube swap in your preamp may be the solution. Only other thing I can see is an anti-feedback unit.

I'd maybe try swapping the first AX7 for maybe either a 12AT7 or 12AY7. I'd go with the AY7 first and see if that helps, or if it reduces your gain too much. If too much, you could try the AT7. I know some amp gurus discourage AT's in amps but a lot of them are thinking in guitarist's terms. I did this with a Blues Jr. not too long ago and it helped it with the feedback immensely.

If its just tube swaps youre after, 12au7 in V1 and 12at7 in V3 may well do the trick. From what I can see on schematic there is very little difference between blues deville and hot rod deville re clean channel preamp. My experience/research has been on HotRod but I believe it's applicable. I have also heard of good results using 12ax7s and lw harp tone plus, plugging into no2 input. Certainly no2 on stock amp is a bit friendlier. I went for modifications on mine and kept the 12ax7s.
Very happy with my HRD, I still mess about trying to find the perfect sound but I don't really need to.
Oh, nearly forgot, bias adjustment may help, the guy with the harp tone pedal told me he had rebiased to 32 Mv on the 6L6s. Sorry if that's too vague. From memory they run about 60 stock?

i had a hot rod deluxe and never really got the tube swap thing back then. what i run in my bassman and silvertone both is, p1 12ax7 and p1 and p3 12au7. this lets all the signal into the pre amp circuit and then tames it some after that.

I learned about swapping out the pre-amp tube on this forum, and it worked great for me. Replaced the 12AX7 with a 12AU7 (the amp only had one pre-amp and one power tube). Got a new old stock Sylvania tube from the tube experts at http://www.bassexchange.com/ in Sherman Oaks, CA

PS: Thanks for the advice

Well the 12AT7 in v1 did the trick! also using input 2 helps! tried changing v3 for a lower gain tube but this seemed to clean up the tone!!! this is in a hot-rod deville,
thanks for all your input (pun intended) Fingers.

Hey Fingers, I am a fellow HotRod Deville user. That's my main gigging amp. I've had a few chats with others using them. Opinion varies. Some think they are uncontrollable and useless for harp. We know that's untrue. Even before i modified it, mine was quite usable on the number 2 input. I'm told the LW harptone+ pedal is very good with this amp too but am yet to try it.
There was a suggestion that running lower mu tubes places greater demands on plate resistors on v3 particularly. 12AT7 probably isn't too bad though. Aki Kumar has a 12Au7 in V1 and 12at7 in V3 on his. By all accounts it's a great sounding amp used by many different players in a jam situation. The on board reverb is fairly decent too, I think

@Superbee, i am more than happy with my hot rod deville!!

we should start an appreciation society lol,
this is the first tube swap i have done in it in 12 years!! always used the stock tubes with my 80s green bullet 520d in input 1 used it for years and never was drowned out! but my latest mic is !!HOT!! but such a nice tone it would be a shame not to use it,
the green bullet is a bit darker but no real feedback problems,
got my first gig in 4 years coming up so need it all to work with no probs!
funny thing i was asked to join this band on the strength of a gig they saw me play 15 years ago.....i cant even remember what amp i was using then!!
thanks for the tube advice, Fingers.
