I bought one and have been using it with great satisfaction for three months. It has a great tone when cupped, but it sounds crisp and compressed pretty much all the time. No problems with the cord, yet.

I don't use the cord except practice.Use a switchcraft adapter and intrument cord no problems. You don't want that cheap cord shorting out when you are gigging.

Just ordered one from amazon. I had been wanting to get one for the past 2 or 3 months but the price was $89.95 then. I knew it would eventually come back down to $49.99 again but I hadn't checked on it lately so thanks for posting Frank. Heck I figure the shell alone is worth $49.99. Grab one before the price goes back up. Harphound a lot of the reviewers on amazon were also complaining about the cord so I took your advice and ordered a switchcraft 332A adapter from Greg.

Besides the body style and connector, how else is a Roadhouse different from a 520DX?

It's a crystal element, the dx is a dynamic I believe.

The thing you have to keep in mind on the Roadhouse is that it's pretty much a Bluesblaster with a different connection and finish. The element in mine died about a year ago. A different crystal or ceramic element may be in order to make it more toney.

Negatives cheap element, chintzy cord.Positives price, ability to upgrade, not to feedbacky, and the darn thing don't sound that bad.I use the harp attack with my vht amp,and this warms the tone, cuts the highs a little.Have not tried through pa or my hg50.

The 520dx can be somebody elses go to,I have played thru them at a jam with a killer bassman amp, they can get more bass buzzy.I like that JT,same size as my baby a blue sunset wood mic from Greg.

It's a lot of mic for the money. Connector and cable are made very cheaply - sometimes the connector won't fit genuine switchcraft connectors and sometimes it will. Lighter and smaller than a 520DX. The element in it is worth about $3. A/B it with a good CM that will cost you $85 or more and it isn't as fat - but then, its only $50!

I like this mic, saves wear and tear on the expensive toys.I lavished money on some better mics, that I saved cutting back on gambling, whiskey, and the most pricey woman.

I can see a guy with a family or shorter budget gigging with this.Hawkeye played one similar and sounds super on what his band plays, and I like them showman moves. The amp modeler pedals call for a cleaner sound, maybe this could be a contender.

I ain't pimpin this thing no more, but i like the shell, and will have a good mic tech fit it with a better element, and for sure get it painted candy apple red.

I don't expect a lot for $50. I think the Astatic JT30 Roadhouse is a screaming deal for $50. When you toss in free shipping, it's even better.

Is it the best microphone that I own? No.

It does sound pretty good and it can be put to good use as a learning tool. It's great for learning microphone handling technique. It's fairly feedback resistant. Plus, if you know how to handle a microphone, you can get some decent sounds of it.

Here is one in use.

it must be marginally better than the nady/bushman torpedo i got a few years back. which is a dynamic element, one of the quietest i've ever heard. and no character. but boy does it look sharp! i will likely put a good element in it and change the connector at some point.

Probably the top three elements you could hope to put in a Roadhouse are a vintage Shure crystal, a vintage Astatic crystal OR ceramic, or a vintage Turner ceramic. The Turner I have for mine sounds really great through pretty much every tuber I've plugged it into. I just have to get my gasket issue resolved with it before I can take it out and play it again.
