----------So I just bought a nice looking T3 bullet on ebay and relative to my other bullets it is weak on volume (around 40% less than either of my other ceramic element mikes) with little relative grit and no tonal differentiation with cupping. My question: This is obviously and exclusively an element (it is the original ceramic) deficit right and has nothing to do with the T3 casing/structure? I ask before returning it. My best. d Facebook

it's the element d. as you know, some are just weaker than others. T-3s normally contained 101 crystals but i wouldn't be surprised if a 151(crystal) or a 127 (ceramic) found its way in there. i use the Astatic Biscuit but the T-3 is a chrome beauty and one of the best bullet type mics for cupping ever. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.

As MP says, it's the element for sure. Ive got one with a Shure CM 99A86 element and I love it!

I've got two of the same elements, one's mounted in an Astatic biscuit and one in a T3 I have tried them both in each mike as an experiment and they both sound 'better' in the T3 shell. Better as in the T3 shell they have more bass response but in the astatic they are more cleaner with nice tone throughtout the elements range. These aren't huge differences but i can hear them. I think that maybe its the biscuits shallower space behind the elemnent? They are both beautiful mikes especially the Biscuit and very easy to cup. Whoops my bad thought we were talking about C/Ms

Crystal elements have no venting to the rear - what's behind a properly gasketed crystal element should make no difference. The distance from element to harmonica DOES matter, though - the biscuit brings the element further forward than the T3. ---------- /Greg

Astatic discontinued the T-3 model in the early '70s.
Greg is absolutely correct about the element not being as close to the grill as Biscuits. the grill is convex woven wire and protrudes.
Pete Sheridan ( of The Quest for Tone in Amplified Blues Harmonica) bought one just before they were no longer avaiable. he thought it looked cool so he got one. it had killer tone! he came over to my place to show me what a great crystal sounds like. :-) ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.
