OK, Zhin convinced me to come and read the board again. I really truly wasn't going to come back but those posts made me feel... um... "all oooogy" inside though that could be from the shrmip Oldwailer and I ate.
Anyway, thank you for the sincere notes. They were not expected so it was a very pleasant surprise to see that the posts on those thread. I'm happy to hang around but I'm going to be who I am and mot much else. You guys shouldn't feel afraid to fight with me and in general I don't mind but I don't want threats of getting punched, I don't need people to point out that I'm fat as shit... I have wife and after 17 years I get enough of that crap everyday.
I believe life is lived on the edge. Now, that doesn't mean we should get stupid and start jumping off bridges or dive to 400ft without oxygen but it does mean if you are constantly stretching your limits then you are constantly learning. I have always had a tendency to push people to their limits it part of my make up but but it also part of what makes me a good teacher. One of my gifts is my odd perspective on things. I can't help that I see things differently but it has helped me become the player that I am.
On the issue of arrogance, you can call me an arrogance if you want but I assure you it's not arrogance. I am a servant to life and people and to be the best servant and learner I have to know, understand and accept exactly where I am in this world. That's said, I know I am a ***** badass harmonica player and will generally act like it because I am a ******* badass harmonica player and I drink Brawndo because I like to win and especially like to win at winning so I can split my pants like the incredible hulk and can crush skulls. If you don't have a clue as to what I am talking about then please research Brawndo - The thirst Mutilator.
When I give advice it's usually given from the perspective that you want to sound like one of the pros. ie Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin, Howard Levy, Jason Ricci etc... they all have many things in common and I compare beginners to them. However, if you're just a guy who doesn't aspire to be anything but a guy who wanks away at jams with shitty tone, let me know so I can tell you that you're great. However if you trully want to be the best player you can be, then I draw line from where I see you as a player currently and where pretty much any of the pro players are.
BTW- the common things I see in pros...
Attitude- they know they are ******* badass players and so they act like ****** badass players meaning they generally don't mince words.
Tone - thik as the stench in a homeless man's underpants if he's even wearing them.
Chops - They can play effortlessly from note to note. Everybody does this differently but they all do it.
Phrasing- Cogent lines that make tell a story. Do you enjoy talking with blathering idiots? I don't.
Sensitivity - they understand the music they are playing. If sounds harsh during a sensitive part of a song it's going to sound stupid.
Dynamics - they make the music they are playing interesting
Limits- They know their limits and push them at home but never in front of a live audience. This means, if you can't play a song and somebody invites you to play that song, you either need to say, I don't know that song and then suggest another or just say no. If you're not a jazz player, don't go to a pro-level jazz jam and ask to sit in.
Dedication - the unyielding quest to know as much as you can about your instrument and the music you play.
***
I'll eventually put my list of gear back up for you but I'm not done kicking Oldwailer's ass around the room so it will have to wait for a week.
Thanks again for you posts, I appreciate every one of them except the ones that tell me I'm going to get punched ot that I should eat donuts. I like donuts and when you say that it makes me not want to eat and then I think you're assholes for making me hate donuts and that's the kind of shit that makes me want to leave because I feel the need to find a substitute for donuts. I've been eating bagels because they look similar but after you dip them in milk and eat three of them, I feel like shit. I don't like that. Let the man have his friggin' pastry please.
I'll be back in a few days and send Oldwailer back after we're through with boot camp and a good ass kicking. GRRRR

Yippee! Welcome back,Chris. I wouldn't have blamed you if you never came back. It was truly shameful. I have a feeling your biggest detractors were the ones that knew the least about harp. Perhaps you aim too high for the general skill level here. I,for one, always want to "push the envelop".
Old Wailer, you dog! Seeing Chris behind our backs! Think you can do a before and after video? Show some of the naysayers what Chris can do.

*sighs*
Suddenly Krispe Creme donuts and black coffee don't seem like a good idea anymore.
Very happy with how things turned out though.
What a strange trip it's been.

Buddah is awesome. He didn;t even get upset when i barfed all over his bathroom last night. No I was NOT drinking, there is a major epidemic of horrible stomach flu going around... Up until that point I was learning more than I ever had before from just hanging around with him and Oldwailer! Welcome back, Sir. I also commend you on an excellent self assessment. I always say about myself "I know my faults, have cured the ones I wanted, and embrace the one remaining."

I prefer Yum-Yums. They're phallic rather than yonic, or proctal, but that's just coincidental.

What's the difference between a doughnut and an asshole? If you don't know, you'd better not order any doughnuts..... Welcome back Chris and thanks for keeping the English language so colorful... do you know that a lot of the s%&t you say can't be found in a dictionary? Us non-native (English) speakers are having a halluva time.....
