this past Saturday I had my last gig with my current band. I am stepping away because of some medical issues and am at the point where I feel like I am not being able to perform at the level I feel is needed. So we turned our latest KC bar gig into a farewell for me and a welcome for the guy taking my place. Great guy, great voice, he should work out fine.

Anyway, I have to say that even though we are a little band, known in our little ren faire world the outpouring of care and respect from the fans was amazing. The place was packed wall to wall and people started showing up way early. haha I lost count of the shots that were bought for the band. We had to start just placing them away before it got to much haha.

And at the end of the night the entire crowd was chanting Thank you Cheeks(my stage characters name), and when I hit the harp solo in one of our songs it was so loud on the recording you can't hear us playing anymore.

A lot of musicians never get to experience anything like that. It was hands down one of the most amazing moments of my life.

Quite often we think that no one really appreciates us or that they only care about you making music. But so many people that night expressed their concern about my health (and suprise as I keep it hidden as much as possible)

But it also really hammered home to me that those of us who are privledged enough to play out in a successful band get that chance only by the grace of the fans. the fact that people are willing to come hear you play and spend money buying whatever the venue is selling.

It was amazing and honestly if I never get back to where I can get on stage again that will go along way toward making that okay. I will still make music. But the medical issues may not allow me much stage time. just to get thru this gig I had to take an extra days worth of my meds.

Point being when you play out, don't forget the fans. Be appreciative of their appreciation. And don't take performing for granted cause you never know when it will get taken away from you. I have often said that performing on stage is my recreational drug of choice. There is no high like the high of a great show.

Well, good for you. Nice story. I'm no stranger to medical issues and meds. But I'm sure you can still make a cameo appearance now and then. Hang in, brother.

"performing on stage is my recreational drug of choice. There is no high like the high of a great show."

you have said a mouthful there.
don't know what your issue is but in the past year i have become closely acquainted with arthritis and tendonitis. shows that once would cost a saturday or sunday- the day after- to recuperate, not seem to cost 2 days or even 3. still, how can i stop if i am able?

my partner of 6 years, also my wife- a fine guitarist and singer in her own right- has had to cut back to about an hour's playing guitar at a time. i have another project going but any time she and i can play- on the street or at a benefit, etc etc- that is precious times.

our plan is still to take off in a few years in an rv and play every place we can until they kick us out! see some usa in the process.

i do hope that when you can you will sit in with the guys. it is true soul food for me personally and i must believe it's the same for a lot of us.

Thanks guys. It really sucks to have to step off the stage. my problem is ongoing nerve pain issues stemming from some surgeries a few years ago. Its a long chain of events that led to this place.

@jbone its Weds from a Saturday show and I am still moving slow. I at the point where it takes me a bit over a week to recover from one show. Which when you are doing a run of several weekends in a row just starts to compound. For instance our spring run was 10 weekends. By weekend 3 I start each weekend in a progressivly lower and lower spot if you say weekend 1 is 100% I fought it for a long time but it finally got to the point where even I just could not do it anymore. Hopefully the docs can find a solution or at least get me on a meds regime that will allow me to get back to some level of performance. I have a concept for a solo thing but right now it is just a concept.

Mainly I was struck again by the fact that for those of us who play out a lot it is the fans that allow us to do that since they are the ones that pay to get in and pay for drinks and what not at the bar. If the bars aren;t making money they won;t bring in live acts.

For now I will have to content myself with making music in my living room so to speak. :) Need Walter to post up some more of his play harp to this tracks :) :) :) hint hint hahahaha

shadoe42: Those songs come when they come. You might be better served to start playing some guitar and or drum stuff on your feet? I went to the 1 man band due to the drive I have to make music most all my free waking hours. I bet if most musicians calculated the time they spent contacting/cooridinating get togethers/discussing songs/driving to and from/and all the other stuff that goes with being dependent on others to make music it might shock you when you compare that to the actual amount of time playing music. I play more hours now then when I was doing 200+ dates a year. Maybe a new direction is coming your way? Walter

It's nice that you were able to get up for a big crowd on your last night. I wish you good luck with your health. I know our bodies sometimes let us down. I've been trying to lose some weight with some exercise, but it seems every time I get on a roll something else breaks down. Right now it's back spasms. Feel better.

As Walter says...time to start a new chapter. On the bright side I can still make music its just right now I can't do a high energy stage show without a lot of discomfort. As Nacoran said our bodies let us down. and at 42 i am not getting any younger :) I certainly am not 20 anymore as my girlfriend likes to remind me hahaha
