Just curious what y'all recommend as far as moving beyond 2nd position. I've got a few licks down in third, but I'm far from comfortable. Should I stick with it for a while before learning first, or work up both simultaneously? How did you advanced players approach this?

I think you should stick with 3rd until you know your way around well. I've been playing for 25 years and only recently got into playing 1st position. Yes, it's handy but not essential to know this one. Better off to master 3rd before moving on. Of course this is an opinion, which we all have.

3rd for me was a hard climb for a while but once i got it down pretty well i found it influenced my overall outlook on playing harp in general. it was sort of natural to explore 1st as well. part of it was realizing how much there is available on the upper end of a harp once you get out of 2nd. and jimmy reed, bless the man, made 1st sound so easy even way back when, but for whatever reason i left it behind until about 7-8 years ago and then really dove into it.
i'd say just keep on with 3rd and later down the line look into 1st. one big help to me was the jimmy reed best of compilation. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

playing other positions such as 3rd or first use the same skills as crossharp...3rd position is great you use it to play in minor keys but can play it over major and it sounds as good if not better than 2nd when playing blues

Third is very useful and first really cool. For blues that is. Outside blues, third is extremely useful and so is first. I can only play a half ass version of jimmy reeds honest I do in first, blueswise. If you feel like a beginner then there is a couple of helpful pages on harpsurgery.com on both first and third pos playing. ---------- Pistolkatt - Pistolkatts youtube
