SURVEY RESULTS
In a completely unscientific poll, participants were asked 3 seemingly simple, but perhaps revealing questions. Here’s what we learned:
TOTAL RESPONSES: 87
What is your preferred genre?
78 % of respondents stated that “Blues” was their preferred music genre. 22% were non-Blues, including everything from Jazz to Acid Rock. --
What motivated you to start playing harp in the first place?
54% said their motivation was a “Specific player or Band.” 25% cited personal or sentimental reasons to start playing 15% like the sound of a harp. Perhaps we can infer expressiveness and emotionality. 6% chose to play harp because they like the portability of the instrument --
What is your preferred harmonica?
Overall, voting indicated the following: 54% of us cite Hohner as the “preferred” manufacturer. In fact Hohner superseded all other manufacturers combined, including: Suzuki (20%) of total votes Seydel (11%) of total votes Lee Oscars (8%) of total votes Bushman (2%) of total votes Hering (1%) of total votes B-Radical (1%) of total votes
Unndecideds (no preferences) were 2% of total votes
Broken down by Manufacturer and Model we can learn a bit more.
HOHNER The Classic Marine Band was the big winner as the most preferred harp by Hohner, grabbing 32%, (1/3) of all Hohner votes. This includes OOTB and Customized versions.
Special 20s ranked as the #2 Hohner, at 26%, (1/4) of all Hohner votes.
Closely behind was the Crossover at 21%, (1/5) of all Hohner votes.
Marine Band Deluxe came next at 13%, (1/8) of all Hohner votes.
Lastly, Golden Melody tied with Blues Harps at 4% (1/25) of Hohner votes. ----------
SUZUKI Manjis took 53% of the Suzuki vote
ProMaster and Blues Masters tied at 12%
Hammond, Pure harps, Firebreath and Olives all tied at 6% ----------
SEYDEL The Seydel 1847 was the big winner, capturing 90% (9/10) of Seydel.
2nd was the Soloist Pro at 10%, (1/10) of the Seydel vote ------- ---
LEE OSCARS There is no breakdown for LO. But, LO came in just behind Manjis and Seydell 1847 in actual votes. ----- ----
BUSHMAN Bushman received only 2 votes. 1 for Soul’s Voice and 1 vote for Delta Frost -------
HERING The Hering 1923 received only 1 vote ------
B-RADICAL B-Rads received one vote --- ---
MBH TOP 5 PICKS
1. Hohner Classic Marine Band 2. Hohner Special 20s 3. Hohner Crossover (by a very thin margin over Seydel and Suzuki) 4. Seydel 1847 or Suzuki Manji

It's an interesting breakdown, but I bet a lot of people haven't played a lot of the harps. I know I haven't. I've only played one Seydel (which I love), and no Suzukis or Herings, or a Bushman, or for that matter B-Rads. It would be interesting to see a larger data set that someone controlled for which harps people had played. (Maybe a huge list of harp models rated 1-10 by anyone who has tried that model, maybe even broken down further into sound, comfort, customizability, playability, excluding price, etc).
It looks like a big win for the Just and Compromised harps over ET.

yep Nate, i sure haven't played a lot of them. if i had unlimited funds maybe i would. but marine bands do the job, i know what i'm dealing with. mbd is nicer for sure but the classic works fine..and its so easy to pop those covers off...theres nothing quite so convenient as those nailed covers. just so long as you dont need to remove the plates...

"just so long as you dont need to remove the plates" Yes. Actually, the nails are the second thing you could bend with that harp!
