Hi...

Did the Astatic 200S ever come with a Japanese element? Just purchased one that was billed "new in box"....and was surprised when I saw "Japan" stamped on the back. Seems to be correct for the period. Also, this particular mic was made in Canada. Any info would be great.

By the way it does sound great!

Thanks...
Jon

You may not like my answer. Aside from being an interesting data point, does it matter? If the mic sounds good to you, what difference does it make?

Play it and have fun with it.

no, they came with Astatic 101 crystals. crystals are fragile and fail.
it was most likely replaced by the ham radio guy who owned it, though these mics were used for other puposes.
sometimes the older Japanese crystals are not bad. the Japanese Primo brand crystal was pretty good.

Annie Raines favors the 200. no chop nothing. she just removes it from the round base it came with.

i have a 200-S. with a replaced element of course.

Mics of that generation are so old and the crystals are so fragile that it is unlikely that you'll ever find another new in box that has survived. Where it has been stored counts for a lot.

The MC-101 crystal sound has far less midrange bite than the MC-151 element does and for some amps, this may be a better option based on the circuitry of the amp. The ceramic equivalent of this is the MC-126, as opposed to the more popular MC-127, which has more midrange bite.

I recently bought an Astatic 200 on ebay with a dead element (reasonable price tho'). Upon the recommendation of someone here (can't recall who), I bought a great! MC-127 ceramic element from the Harp Mic Shop (harpmicshop.com)) for under $70. They also made a new cable to replace the old, old one that came with the mic ($10 more). The mic sounds terrific with this element. To top it off, a friend gave me a chrome grill from a 200 he wasn't using and the mic looks sharp.
