I have a little valve amp that was used as an extension for a record player. It only has one valve, a Mazda PCL83. It looks exactly like a 12AX7 but when I tried one in the socket the amp was dead. Is there an equivalent valve I could use in place of it?

Hi Oisin,
Don't know of any tube subs (doesn't mean that the don't exist) but the PCL83 is a different tube to the 12A#7/ECC8# series - these are two triodes in one glass case, typically (but not always) used as voltage gain amplifiers or preamp tubes.
Your PCL83 is basically one half of a 12A#7, the other half is like a little EL84 pentode power tube, making about 2.2W at most. NOS PCL83 should be around at not too high a price.
Don't try putting a 12A#7/ECC8# bck in there again, you'll be putting heater voltage on the grids and all sorts of other tube killing things. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

There is a substitution listed by the valve museum, LN309, CV5144. but the real thing is available. Saw nos mallard type on eBay for £12. I expect you'll get something less hyped considerably cheaper. Saw a nos, nib Bentley pcl83 with 18 hours to go, currently 99 pence, plus postage ----------

Many thanks for this info Mark and SuperBee. You learn something new everyday on this forum. I have just checked ebay and there are four of these valves listed there so I'll get one from there. I love the tome I get from this little amp, not very loud but sounds great. ---------- Oisin
