The other night I had a stuck reed on one of my SP20s and I took it apart to free it up. Turns out there was bit of pocket fluff stuck in the reed.
I then noticed how dirty the reed plate was on and tried to clean it but I had to stop as the cloth I was using kept hitting the reeds.

Is there anything you can dip the reedplates in that would clean them up nice without affecting the reeds? I do seem to remember seeing a metal plate advertised on ebay that you placed in water along with some chemicals that instantly cleaned metal but I don't know if this would work with brass.

Any tips on cleaning plates?

Hi Oisin,
Somewhere here you can find a link posted to an article by Jason Ricci on the subject of cleaning harps. I looked & couldn't find it.

Anyway, it lays out a way to really clean up your harps. I was skeptical, because it uses isopropyl alcohol instead of gin or bourbon, but I tried it and it really revives the harps.

It takes a while--I think Jason does it every day--I don't think I'll ever do that--but some of my old harps sure sound better now. . .

Thanks OldWailer I'll have a look for that. I work for a pharma company and we just happen to use both Isopropyl and absolute ethanol here so I can try that out.
