Is it just me or do you have that too? The relationship I have to harps is the same as between women and shoes: they must buy them, even if they can't walk in them.

I'm far away from being a good harp player (I'm working hard to become one) but I can't resist buying harps! I just love this instrument. It's such a good feeling when you buy a new harp and you open the case for the first time... the shiny coverplates... argh!

Well, even if I'll never master the instrument I'll keep my collection anyway... just to look at my little darlings from time to time. That's already a satisfaction :)

I also have the problem with the harp addiction and it's not funny. There are the moments when I must pick it up and play something or just blow/draw a little, but if it's 11 PM and everybody is sleeping or I have a throat disease and playing can injure me even more, it ain't no good.

I've also got a lot of harps and I know the feeling, when you just bought a new harp (the shiny cover plates etc). However, when I try it out I am always disappointed because it plays so much worse than my broken in harps.

Much more than having a harp shopping addiction I have a serious jamming addiction.

I thinks all harp players are some kind of addicts... I ALWAYS have a harp with me, no mather if I just go to a bakery nearby to buy a roll, go to University 15 miles from home or anything else. I also have sideburns to make me look more bluesy, wear a mini harp on neck, could talk about harps whole night long and play in the middle of the street if there is a demand (other circumstances are not important). Yes, I'm a harp nerd, but that's who I (and most of harp players) am :). And this is beautiful, like Adam said in one of his videos, Harpguys are always crazy! I think that specially about their harps and music.

Me too but I think thats because Im rather new to playing the harmonica. Something like 4 months, maybe longer & I already got 3 keys and people around me let me know that they think I should slow down and stick with those for a while. But, I do want to but a couple dozen, plus accessories, right now.

Yeah, I also love that feeling of opening a new harp for the first time. Especially when I recieved first custom made harps that I had been anticipating for weeks. (I wasn't disapointed.)
But I have a fantasy of being able to own just one harp in every key for a lifetime without reeds going bad or out of tune.
I also have fantasies of time travel and flying cars....

I would not say I am addicted, but I have a few after starting last May. I had a Hohner Blues harp in C I got a few years ago and did not use seriously at all. Acculated a Lee Oscar C (OK), Seydel C (Nice), Buchman C (I use it most), Golden Melody A ( I think I got a lemon but a solid harp), Hohner Sp20 in Bb and A ( which I like a lot), a suzuki Bluesmaster (G) and Promaster (E) (not impressed). Settled on Bushman Delta Frosts and got a D, F, and a G.

I bought a brand at a time a key at a time for feel, sound quality, and responsivness, hence the variety. I think the Hohner Sp 20 and Delta frost are best for me. No more Marine Band or Suzuki's. My taste. Others like these.

This is cheap. I used to shoot trap and these guns start at $1500 and go way up. I used to have 5 of those, I have maybe $400 invested in harps and do not have to go outside to use them. Good deal!

I don't think I'm a Harposexual--the holes are too small and there are too many sharp edges!

Harp players get off relatively easy with the GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) attacks--most of the crap I want as a guitar player is way more expensive than harps and harp gear. . .

Thats why I work a second job at the music store. When my 30 to 40 girls at home get old and smudgey. I go to the store, unlock the glass case open the individual boxes and polish them with the dream that someday they may be mine. But if I buy one more, I may have to remarry that woman for the third time, and next time I want to be the Plaintiff !! P.S. Oldwailer: How great to play all the new guitars with out the old ones getting jealous!

Great thread!

For me it is the other way around.

I am not addicted to getting new harps, just not fan of new harps (a necessary evil in my eyes)...BUT I am ADDICTED to certain harps I have played for a while. Is it just me or do you find that after some time you get attached to a certain harp over the others? Like a connection to that specific one? and not just cause it's in your favourite key but the harp itself? ...anyone? or am I crazy? I just get all week and weepy over an old harp that has taken me a long way and is on it's last legs. It's like having a great dog, with you all the time, understands you like nobody else and then, when I just know it's days are numbered, it cuts me down in my tracks. That point that the poor tarnished, dented, scratched up, beat down, over filed, little fistwhistle full of my spit and soul gives out and moves on...man it's a killer...that's what I am addicted too, aside from honking on the darn things of course.

I think we all get the addiction if we stay in long enough.

THE LIST AND KEYS
1. Marine Band in G--must mean "Gritty"--My favorite
2. Blues Harp in D--another sweet one
3. Special 20 in F#--high as Hell! My Dog's favorite!!
4. Lee Oskar in C--Christmas present--I quite like it
5. Piedmont Blues set of 7--some say these harps are
crap, but all mine play pretty good (for my level
of experience, anyway) Besides, the case will be
good for later on.
6. HotMetal, PocketPal, and a couple BluesBand in C
I think these three are the same harp with slightly
different covers. I may (probably) be wrong. I
mentioned this in another thread, but couldn't find
out for sure. These are good for mechanicing--you
know you are sooner or later. Cheap enough for
tinkering.

Hey bluzlvr, I DO have a time machine. But it only works forward, and only at normal speed! Flying Car would be too cool Man. Imagine a flying "Woodshed". Probably a good idea to have auto-pilot though. LOL. Harp gear aquisition has proven to be one of my cheaper addictions. Anybody remember the 80's? Think Miami Vice, or Jamaica Mon. Some of you catch my drift, I'm sure.

It's not just harps I'm addicted to but mics and amps as well. Times I'd get home from work and my missus would say "Is that another thing you've bought on ebay that was delivered by the postman today? What are we gonna eat when you've spent all our money on a microphone?"
Well at least my kids won't turn out lard-asses.
(She closed my ebay account by the way. I just get to look at all that harp/amp porn now).
One thing I used to buy a lot was job lots of blown out harps, so I've got approx 100 of those all waiting to be customised into superharps....as soon as I can drag myself away from mylaptop. But as Silas says...harps are probably what saved me from some rather more expensive addictions.

Guys, for those of you who have a favorite harp that stands out based on how it plays and sound... there's a possibility that the reeds are configured in a manner that feels most natural to you...

Of course there are other factors that should be taken into account like materials, how sealed is it, the tuning...

Silas, Oisin... you guys know anything about reggae harp? I'd like to learn some of that. :)

Yeah, it seems cheaper than Jamaican or South American addictions, but there's a "gateway drug" thing happening to me. I can feel it:

Spec20s: C,D,Bb,A,E,F
Marine Bands: C
Big River: G
Pro Harp: G, Paddy Richter tuned by me
Firebreath C

This last one was not cheap, but on the other hand, not much more than the cheapest custom harp from Buddha...

Oooh, Custom Haaaarrrrppp...crack for the amateur harp geek... Oh my God! I think I'm becoming harposexual!

By the way, I used to sit in regularly with a reggae band: cross and 3rd pos work really well for Tosh, Marley and Inner Circle.

I have 40+ harps including 20+ hohner cross harps and several meister classes and then bought a Fender Champ 600 amp because it was half price at the music store......... now I also have to have every capacitior, speaker mod out there as well as the harps. There are now nearly enough replaced bits to make a second amp.

The thing is I now need a mic...or two..... or lots of them, old ones with chrome.

Oh and then obviously more harps and what about a second amp or perhaps a delay?

Main thing is that my first Harp a 91' Hohner cross harp in C is still the best and is like a pair of old comfortable shoes. Would love to find some more of the older ones. It almost plays it's self it is so easy.

Lets face it I dont work 'cos I like it, I just need toys!

It would all get spent any way.

If I could, I'd try every harp in every key just to see what I like best. I always can't wait to blow out old harps so I have an excuse to try a new one. If harmonica was an electric instrument you could play without making noise by plugging your headphones in, I'd probably never sleep- as soon as I'm finished with homework around 11 I'd just play all night.

They say harmonica is a cheap instrument. Yea right. Once you buy one you have to keep buying wonderful new harps for the rest of your life.

What I like the most is to come back on harps that I didn't like at first. For instance the Hohner Blues Harp was my very first harp and I didn't really like it. After that I bought a Lee Oskar and thought it was the best harp ever. One year later I use the Blues Harp a lot and leave the Lee Oskar in my cupboard.

I still keep changing brand, model and key as the differences between the harps are really big. It's hard to judge a harp if you only have it in one key.

Right now I find the Spec20ies really consistent in quality. Bought 3 and each one plays very nicely (especially the A is top notch). The Fire Breath is the Ferrari in collection. It costs more but hey what a harp (have already ordered a few more...).

Hohner Blues Harp: C
Lee Oskar: A
Hohner ProHarp: Bb, C
Special 20: F, D, A
Golden Melody: D
Fire Breath: Eb
Marine Band: Low G
ProMaster valved: C

hmm I don't know em all by heart.

Even worse: I start finding the exotic models more and more sexy. I'll get a Suzuki Overdrive soon and I'm already flirting with the XB-40...SOMEBODY STOP ME!!

I buy new instruments whenever I've got some money. I've got 13 harmonicas for now, but only 6 "normal" ten hole diatonics: 2x Hohner Marine Band Deluxe (A and D), 2x Hering Vintage (G and E), Hering Delta Blues in C and Hohner Big River Harp C tuned by me to Db. Some of my other harps are Hohner Chromonika I in G, octave tuned Hohner Unsere Lieblinge in C, 96 reeds double sided C/G tremolo harp with the name "Bandmaster Tremolo", and few other. I just feel that I can't stop buying them, I always have a reason for doing it (different key, interesting sound, wooden comb and so on).

For me it's never about needing a certain key anymore--like when I blow out my Bb and I need one for Adam's lessons--it's all about when I can afford a new one.

My wife takes care of the accounting stuff for us--so I have her trained to alert me when I can afford a new harp. When I get the go-ahead, I sometimes shop around for a day or so to find something that interests me. I just ordered a low D MB yesterday.

My next trick is going to be upping the gradient for my wife so that she will start thinking in terms of getting some custom harps--I haven't tried one yet, but the things I've been reading about them are just awesome--I customize a little myself--but I want to see what a real pro can do with them--then I'll probably take it apart and try to learn something from looking at it as well as playing it--and of course, just plain fondling it. . .

Well, Oisin, You just had to mention amps and microphones, didn't You. Damnit! Here goes some MORE money! LOL.

I have homemade a couple of mics from old telephone parts. Look up I-mic on the web. Also check out Bottle O' Blues mics. The speaker part of the old phone seems to work better than the actual microphone part. Sounds more gritty and dirty, and they work pretty good for about $5 for parts, if you have the old phone parts. Besides, I can't justify an expensive mic for my level of play/annoyance--remember my biggest fan?--My Dog? Get the volume control and jacks from Radio Shack--1/4 or 1/8 inch jack--your preference. Follow the wiring diagram on the I-mic site. Relatively easy to build with minimal soldering experience, but I did take an electronics course back in the late 80's. The cool part is finding an enclosure for the components. Most anything they will fit inside is OK. Look for stuff that fits well in the hand for cupping. What the f***. It's STILL a whole lot cheaper than those 80's addictions.

Zhin, I don't know much about Reggae, but I do like a lot of the music. UB-40 comes to mind as a band I really like. Check out this site--http://www.mikestrickland.net/reggae/
--there's some Bob Marley, Bob's son Ziggy Marley, and UB-40 MIDI's to check out here. There's some links at the bottom, but I didn't check them yet. There is a lot about Reggae out there. Good question. Anybody else out there playing Reggae?

What next? I know! EFFECTS PROCESSORS!! Never enough toys-or money!!!

I would like some advice on harp experimentation:

We (well, most of us) want to try new harps, something different. I'm mostly Lee Oskar, but I've got some Golden Melody's, Special 20's, and Marine Bands. I started off on Huang, and I have one Meisterclass and two Bushman's.

I'd like to try Suzuki's and Seydels, maybe even a custom job. But what keys should I get? If I get all new ones in the key of C, I'll be able to fairly compare it to others. Or should I diversify, and trust that I'll be able to tell the quality difference, and my preference, between an A Seydel and a C Suzuki?

Silas...you had to mention making your own mics. Why I oughta....
My missus had a new hairdryer which had a lovely chrome effect air intake grill at the back that I thought would make a great microphone. When it suddenly "stopped working" I asked her if I could have it and I made a (rather large and totally impractical) mic from it using a crystal element I bought on e-bay. When I showed it to her she was a little suspicious that that nice new hairdryer had suddenly become a mic so quickly. I have had to keep reassuring her that all Chinese electrical goods are crap and I don't know why her new hairdryer (with a not so nice air intake) has worked perfectly since she got it and it's chinese too. Wives can be so suspicious, can't they ?

Oisin--I see right now that You and I probably think the exact same way. (and that's a scarry thought!) It is most likely going to get us into even MORE trouble, especially with the women. LOL. You are right about suspicious wives. I never really had any problems with the 3, yep that's right, count em', 3 ex-wives having any jealousy problems. Now my new Girlfriend is another story. She got all up in the air when I was talking to ex #3 on my cell phone the other day. Go figure. Might have to trade her in if she don't calm down. NOT LOL! Very serious here.

If you get into the homemade mic thing, Put the volume control on it. Then you can crank the amp, and turn the mic down. Helps a bunch with feedback, and makes the tone nasty. Radio Shack has a mini volume control with on/off switch. #271-0215--small and very convenient to mount almost any place. You will have to buy a knob for it if you don't have one in the parts box. Cost is about $4. I'm new at the amp/mic deal, so I'm sure others have much better advice on this front.

Funny how women get perterbed when you think up a better idea for an item than which it was originally designed for, eh? It ain't like you took her tampoon case! Disposable Douche indeed! Who would keep this stuff in the first place? ROFLMAO.

Think up something else expensive we just gotta' have. I'm thinking about it too.

Silas....I know exactly what you mean. Men are from mars and Women don't know where the f**k they're from.

Thanks for the tip on the volume pot. I've never tried that before and I'll give it a go. I have a Fender champion 600 which I got at Christmas and I can't get my Green bullet volume knob past 12 if I crank the amp, so I know what you mean.

I tried a little Toshiba dynamic mic for a tape recorder on it and no feedback and it sounds loads better than the bullet.

You see...we've got these constructive hobbies and they're still not happy. Makes me want to pick up my pipe and suck a lungfull of hydro down.

Hey Oisin,
Make sure to hook the volume pot up the right way, or it'll be backward. DUH! I know this sounds stupid and simple, but so am I sometimes. I soldered the second one I built ass-backwards and had to de-solder and fix it. Not a big deal, but a pain in the butt. So pay attention to the wiring and all will be Jake. These "junk" mics I have been building with the volume control work pretty good with this cheap Peavey Backstage amp I have cranked up and the mic volume down a little. This amp has something called trans-tube technology, which is supposed to emulate something like the overdrive sound of a tube amp. I don't know. But, it sounds OK to me. It's only 10 watts, but that seems to be plenty for me. I can hook my mp3 player through it and do some play-a-long. COOL!!! A poor man's studio. HE HE!

Been (quite) a while since I loaded up the pipe though. LOL. Kinda' miss it, except for the rampant paranoia. (You know--the peeping out the window every few seconds?) This (pain in the ass) girlfriend of mine is getting to be almost too much. Thinks I'm on the sly ALL the time. I hate my cell phone. Don't answer it and see what happens. WW III.

Yep, I've got too many harps for my ability. All Marine Bands, except for one GM:

14-hole C
SBS C
Low D
Low F
G
Ab
A
Deluxe A
Bb
Deluxe Bb
B
C
GM C
Db
D
Eb
F

Oh, and I've got a broken MB in D as the first item in my spares box!

What am I likely to buy next?
Another GM in G or A.
Perhaps a MB deluxe in D.
Another SBS, don't know which key.
Maybe a Seydel super low.
Maybe an SM57
Maybe a Harley Benton GA5
Maybe a flight case
Maybe a chromatic. I was thinking of a 12-hole Superchromonica, but I noticed Jason plays a Suzuki.
And a couple more jews harps!

I have harps I play just because I have them..eventually we end up playing in that key or it's crossharp key. I use the sheer volume of harps to increase my practice session. I don't like to quit until I've played them all in every way i think i will need that key for the forseeable future. I have ton's of jam tracks too. As for gear, I got an amp cheap before i really knew how to use it for harp. i used it for guitar in the meantime. I have built mics from old CB microphones, electret elements various objects... including plastic easter eggs, license plate bracket lights, even a cut down vocal mic that ends up being my favorite all around mic. Didn't see that one coming. I have tweaked reeds, opened all the covers except one special 20 in the key of B and one franken harp. I have made frankenharps of many combinations and even kept some that way.

Current illness includes:

C franken harp from blues harp with big river covers
D harpmaster
E harpmaster
Low F promaster
F harpmaster
G harpmaster..um..small trend here...means nothing though
A Marine band...my favorite go-to harp it turns out.
Bb harpmaster..just for Adam's youtube lessons
B special 20...becoming another favorite for reasons i don't know.
C Special 20
D franken harp made from big river F# comb, D blues harp reed plates and blues harp cover plates.
F# franken harp from D blues harp comb (the worst piece of the franken harp series and the reason for the franken harps..to make a good D harp)F# big river reed plates, and mangled D blues harp cover plates..plays pretty good for all the damage.

And finally an A special 20 that got me back into this final..finally successful... attempt to play this great instrument after 35 years+ of failures in first position.

Next harp will be a Manji, probably in A for comparison purposes..gotta go, here come the guys in the white coats. It's been a busy 8 1/2 months.

I have a love/hate relationship with old threads I posted on like this one. Makes me smile to look back and think that damn I made tons of progress in the last 9 months. Allows me to relax cause I know in 9 months Ill be towering over my current performance again if I keep at it. Sorry, didnt mean to steer the thread off course.

Like jon Ive played like a year and have easily $2500 invested in harp related equipment & gear. I dont even want to do the math, maybe even 3k. Luckily I wont have to by a new amp & mic yearly :) .

Been 'sick' for twenty years now, and I've discarded/lost or traded some along the way, plus given some to my three kids, but here's my top-of-my-head inventory:

a Lee Oksar in every major-tuned key including HiG but no loF, with a spare here and there.

3 modified Sp20s in c
