ive been playing the harmonica for approx three and half weeks now. i have purchased three harps marine band in c hohner pro harp in c and a susuki bluesmaster in c.ive been blowing the nuts of them .havent really got far at all .just driving me completely mad with frustration. but still im gona stick with it, just to master the very basics would be magic. Been following adam gussows lesson on you tube thats been very helpfull, and crikey hes good . but the real problem for me is her indoors, shes constantly moaning about the noise and basically cant stand me playing, so one or two cross words have been spoking as you could imagine, the classic line was IT would be alright if you could play the dam thing, so it looks like im gonna have to practise in the car. I havent got a laptop so looks like im gonna be knackered.any advice would be welcome. cheers

LOL,
Don't put up with her bullshit man, you need to get an amp so you can really crank it up for her pleasure.
On a serious note, I just close the bedroom door. Do you live in a small house? Take some CD's out to the car and go to town, don't play for your wife just yet.

find somewhere she can't moan.. my wife is the same but we trade off, it's about compromise..then again I am old and have been married for 30 years + they get used to it but you do need a big house so you can shut those doors. play in the car or the stairwell...she will appreciate if you are enjoying your life!!

You could convert the youtube video to an mp3 and then listen to it on an mp3 player while you listen in the car. You can do the conversion using www.youtubehack.net . The last time I mentioned youtbehack (under a different user name), Adam said he was OK with people doing that.

I had a wife like that once. ONCE!

It was worth my half of the house to say goodbye.

Aside from that - just find a place in the house where you can play without her hearing too much. Bathroom. Big Closet? Basement? Or you can send her to one of those places for an hour a day and practice where you like!

I agree with djm3801. First ex-wife saif if I bought a motorcycle. we would get a divorce. I told her I sure was going to miss her. Second ex-wife said I didn't like you when you drank, and now that you've quit, I don't care for you much now! Girlfriend I have now encourages my playing, but I can't hardly stand HER smothering ass. There is no solution that will satify both parties. Same old story. You love her, but she loves him, and he loves somebody else--You just can't win. Of course you can always trade up or sideways. NEVER trade down!

Try learning an easy song that you can dedicate to her that is either sexy or endearing. I know it is sucking up, but I reeled in my wife with learning a well toned 2nd position version of Amazing Grace. Now I even get an occasional, "Wow! You are getting better at that thing." This coming from a person (my wife) who does not especially like music a great deal.

Its the winter and about 30ish degrees where I live so Im partially in my car for that reason. Otherwise I turn up my stereo with jazz or something and somehow people dont hear my playing under it.

Maybe try staying away from anything above the 6 hole too when someone's in earshot and you havent gotten good at smooth tone up there it can be piercing even to ones own ears.

I'm lucky, my wife is tone deaf. Because my playing is normally off key, her tone deafness somehow compensates by making it sound right for her.

The trouble is I can't get an accurate critique because she thinks that everything I play is good but I know it ain't. Can't win.

Bring your worst behaved friend home, preferably drunk or high, get him to be as obnoxious as possible to your missus. When he's gone, tell you missus how lucky she is to have a partner who has such a creative hobby and how she should appreciate you more.
Don't worry when she says "well if you behaved like that I'd kick you out anyway". It's just her way of saying she knows how lucky she is.

the car is not so bad.....I have the same problem, wife does not like blues music and playing harp drives her mad. so apart from the rare couple of hours I get at home alone I mostly play in the car on the way to and from work, I work night shifts and most mornings I take a detour to the local beach and get an hour of 'proper' practice in. I have all my music on an mp3 player and plug it into the car stereo. at the moment I get to watch the sunrise and the early morning ferry pull out of port.
on the other hand if she asks you what your learning to play tell her its the 'any other wife would have got the message and fkd off by now blues' you can get plenty of practice while wife is staying at her sisters....
