Been working with Adam's excellent Hills' Blues Collective jam tracks. It's fun stuff and fairly varied.
Here's me playing and singing along with one. Just down and dirty with the iSight camera and mic on my computer so it is not the best quality, but ...
Also cut off the ending (which was the most earth-shattering harp playing ever, but no one will ever know how phenomenal it was but me.) ;^)

Thanks, Adam. The resources here really help.

That was great, Bb--you stepped right up and grabbed it and did it--very cool. It does sound thin--but that's just the sound equipment. The cool thing is to have the balls to hit it full blast like that. . .

Thank you. It's not just the sound equipment, though. My tone does need work. I have to really work to keep my jaw dropped and make a more resonant chamber. I have a smallish (yet somehow ruggedly handsome) jawline.
The jam tracks do rock, though.

Hey Bb, how long have you been playing? I listened to you and immediately threw all my harps away. Then I picked them back out of the trash...I want what you got!

Hi guys. Bb, I commend you on your playing!! Nice job!! This is all very interesting to me as a violinist. As most of you know, I trained classically, and that is all that I played for quite a while. Then when I joined the Musicians Union, my first job was to play "strolling" stuff by ear with no music. Kind of scary because the music on the stand was not there. That stand with the music is like a security blanket for a classically trained musician. So at this job, we did all popular stuff - standards, show tunes, etc. It was the Gene Donati Orchestra. Lol, Gene even included a disco number. Good heavens, I never dreamed that I would be playing a disco number on the violin, but when you freelance, it's good to do everything. That way, there are more jobs and more opportunities, and it makes life even more interesting. Now when I got into the improvisational stuff, blues, jazz and country, and self-taught myself, I did exactly what Adam is doing in his jam videos. I played the recordings and jammed along with Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Johnson, Robert Cray, Alan Jackson, etc. Perfecting this stuff is only a matter of practice. And lots of it! And yes, it is loads of fun!

Great playing and singing! You must be playing for many years to make up nice licks like that.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. You're all too kind.
Geordie – the track is Shuffling Apples of Adam's Hill's Blues Collective jam tracks. The words are from The Fabulous Thunderbirds Wait On Time.
When I do this with my band we usually do it in B instead of A like in the jam track. Actually doing it in B lets me go a little harder on the vocals than I was able to do for the video ...
Been "playing at" playing harp for a long time. But, I got a bit more serious about it last March when I went to Jon Gindick's Jam Camp in Clarksdale. I came back home and formed a band with a bunch of guys who are way, way more talented and experienced than me and that really helps push me. We're playing out about 4-6 times a month now.
I still have a long road ahead to get where I want to be on harp, but I figure hey, I got till I'm dead to get better right? I wanna keep growing at this for as long as I got.

I would say there's no such thing as the "place I want to be", playing harp or anything else in life ... Because when you reach that point, what happens ? well, you find another place you want to be at ... "there's no way to the goal, the way is the goal" my 2 cents pseudo zen-harp philosophy. cheers

Bb,
I enjoyed watching your performance. I wish I were good enough or gutzy enough to do that. Perhaps when I get better I will give it a try. I guess playing with a band does not hurt, but your performance was enjoyable. If you told me you started harp this year, I would have put my stuff on Ebay. Nice job.
