Derek is my favorite musician and probably my biggest influence. I saw his band on Monday night - 2nd row dead center - and picked up on a few things that I think are often overlooked.
1. Was their balance of improv and arranged parts and how they overlapped. Most harp players improv the whole show, and these guys (including the horns) knew exactly when to play, but they often improved within that. You could see the horn players tell each other what to play (improv), but it was obvious they were supposed to play (arranged).
2. The dynamics in each song where amazing all around. Not only the interplay of musicians (which is my FAVORTIE thing about playing music), but how the built songs to reach high and low points.
3. Everyone on stage was having a blast...they were high fiving each other after solos even...total team effort.
4. Derek Trucks is so amazing at what he does. He is never rushed and always dyanmic. In addition, he built a lot of his leads over melodies. His phrasing on slide is amazing. I hear a lot of example on the board here of guys throwing riffs all over songs without telling a story.
For other harp players, it might be cool to hear the riffage, but 99% of people are going to be lost.
I was one of the youngest people in the crowd, lol. I chatted a few people up, and I would say MAYBE 10% of the audience was a performing musician? There were about 1,500 of us there.
TTB is essentially a jam band and they held EVERYONE'S attention for two hours of straight playing. This worked because they created moments, balanced their dynamics, and played off each other. There were whole songs were Derek didn't take a lead. He just pointed and nodded at other guys. Each musician in the band (10 piece) had at least one moment to show off...
The keyboard player played a tune on flute and did some flute-boxing, the bass player used what looked like a bass banjo and scatted in unison to his solo, the trombone player sang vocals on a tune...just amazing and so professional.
The opener, Ryan Shaw, had a tremendously talented band, but they skipped all the things TTB was doing right and just jumped from song to song. The singer would just check his setlist on an iPad when guys played leads, no one looked at each other, most the songs were played just like the album...I mean really, it was the completeness of the show that made them so-so compared to TTB, and not the ability. The Shaw dude could flat out sing, and they were amazing for their final number.
It was a good experience of what not to do and what to do.

Jason or Carlos would be so cool to see perform with Derek - They would know how to click with him!

Derek is awesome. And I agree with Jason and Carlos. I would also say Huey would be another good pairing to play with him. ----------

I always felt Chris Michalek would have been a great add to the Derek Trucks Band if they went with harp...but his style was a lot like Derek's, so maybe not.
I love Carlos, but I think with the dynamic of the band as it is, Jason and his ability to improvise in a jam band setting would be pretty cool for the more Allman Brothers type stuff.
Stevie Wonder-like playing would be ideal for the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. They are essentially a soul band. ---------- Mike VHT Special 6 Mods Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas - When it needs to come from the soul...

My girlfriend and I will be on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise in October (in the Caribbean) where the Tedeschi-Trucks Band will be one the headliners. I'll get to see them at least 2 times during the week, not counting their Pro Jam (where the headliners host a midnight jam session with whichever pro players want to jam), as well as any jamming they do individually with other artists. Now the pro harp players on board will be Magic Dick, James Harman, Mark Wenner (Nighthawks), Bobby Rush, and John Nemeth, so we will see which one, if any, will jam with Tedeschi-Trucks at their Pro Jam.
