Hello All,

I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself. I’m a blues harp enthusiast from the old days… before Youtube, the Internet, DVDs, CDs and cassette tapes. I got my first harp in 1971 and played that thing until the covers fell off. Butterfield and Magic Dick were my heroes. You had to listen to albums over and over and over again to learn anything.

My cousin had given me an album of a little known player (at that time) of whom I had never heard of…Charlie Musselwhite. There was a new guy making some inroads on the West Coast…Rod Piazza. I was a teenager then.

When my buddies were playing baseball, I was at a jam session. It was all very cool and exciting. Magic Dick’s “Whammer Jammer” had sent everyone to the woodshed. In 1985, I had to grow up and assume the responsibilities that a family, the homestead and a career foists upon one. My harps, my 1964 Champ amp, the JT-30 and the Shure PE54 were placed into hibernation. I hadn’t touched any of it since then. Then something happened. I discovered the real power of YouTube. Suddenly, as if dropped from heaven, I began to see some really good harp players, not only play, but also teach--- What a great gift to the new players. I know playing a harp well is very challenging. But, being able to watch someone play as he/she explains it, being able to slow down the faster riffs without changing the pitch, being able to see if the player is inhaling or exhaling and watching how and when he opens a cupped mic is all very useful…at least to me. About 2 weeks ago, I dusted off all my stuff, tossed the crappy harps and bought 2 Manji’s. I’m back at it with full force.

It’s great to be here with all of you.

Welcome aboard from SmAlbany, NY. Send me your tax dollars and your corrupt state legislators. :)

1971 was a good year. I guess, in a round about way I started training for the harmonica that year. Breath in, breath out. It was only a couple years later and I was talking in complete sentences! I didn't actually get a harmonica until years later though.

Seriously welcome aboard. It's always great to see a fellow New Yorker. :)

my main harp choice currently- and for a couple of years now- is the manji. i've managed to flat very few reeds in one, maybe 2. they have held up very well in all acoustic public playing as well as with full band.
sounds like an ideal harp amp/mic combo too.
