Harpmart has both on sale. I need a backup Bb. I play mostly 1847 classic. Have been thinking about trying soloist pro. Then Jeff messes with my head and throw the Manji in the mix at a similar price. The manji comb holes look smaller like a MB. Cover looks like it lips over front of comb. Wonder about responsiveness between the two. Any comparisons out there.----------

I've played both and I like the solist pro better.

Thanks guys. I'm so use to and happy with 1847s that I'm leaning towards soloist pro. As a backup cost is a factor. One of the reasons I play 1847s is that I seem to be very hard on my bends and go thru a lot of 4 draw reeds. I even damage stainless reeds. I believe this is more my forcefulness than the reeds. Hoping soloist pro plays similar to the 1847. I was told the upper octave may not be as responsive.

Don't play solist pro if you have moustache! Worst plucker I have ever played! And I think there are some issues with milling marks on reeds, but maybe that's been addressed now. Otherwise they are nice, once you get used to the funny smell/taste.

I bought a soloist pro and was disappointed. I however tried a Manji and bought a whole set. I really believe it is a matter of preference.

Manjis sound great, they're comfortable and the reeds are durable phosphor bronze. If you play the solist pro like you do the 1847, you'll break those brass reeds pretty quickly.

The hole spacing issue is no big deal. It goes away with a little practice.

If I was choosing and they were the same price it would be no contest. I have played both, don't play either as a 1st choice. They are both completely ok, but the manji is a cut above in my opinion. I have one of each in my gig set. I used to have more solist pros, but I just kept this Ab because it's useful. I thought they might be a budget alternative to marine bands, but after using them for a while I didnt like them as much. Just a (good) budget harp in my view.

FYI, if you are used to the Seydel hole-spacing, the narrower spaced holes on the Manji will likely throw you off a bit. Maybe not the best things for a pure back-up harp... Also, the Solist Pro will take 1847 reedplates perfectly, so you could always use it for parts down the line...

The Manji is a good harp tho, don't get me wrong. I've played a couple, but haven't bought one, mainly because I don't absolutely "need" one! ;) I do own a couple of Solist Pro's though.

My 2 cents worth - I have a Manji and a whole kit of soloist pros. I like the Manji a lot, but for my big paws, it seems really small.

I really like the Soloist Pros but have broken reeds in 4 or 5 of them. I just ordered an another soloist Pro in A. The comments on the upper holes being stiff is probably warranted but I have not found it to be a problem for me. As I pointed out, I have broken reeds on 4 or 5 of them. The hole varies, I've broken 3,4 and 5 draw reeds. If I weren't convinced it's me playing too hard, I would stop buying them! I think I need to adjust my style of playing...it's a work in progress.

Thanks again to all that responded. I like the fact the 1847 reed plates interchange. I don't like the broken draw reeds tho. Dan and I probably play similar after Jimi Lee taught us to honker down on the bends. Dan, I was wondering how Ted liked the Soloist Pro he bought at HCH. Certainly you made him play it all the way to Ohio. Thanks again. Leaning towards the Soloist Pro.

I have a Manji in bflat and I have to say that I'm not happy with--the reeds are stiff and they do not respond with ease at all. I do own a Crossover in bflat, though ,and I find it crisp, loud, truly responsive to what I am trying to do. And they have a great tone.

My opinion is if you want to try different harps - get both, which to get first is your choice. If you want a harp you get used to - get one more 1847. Soloist Pro is a good harmonica but reeds will not be last longer as 1847. Don't know about reed longevity on suzuki manjy, but tuning anyway will not be as consistant as 1847. But Manji, Soloist pro and 1847 all have different tone and response it's interesting to experiment and to choose, Manji have maximum overtones, less fundamental tone, 1847 have minimum overtones but strond fundamental tone. Jason Ricci prefers Majis, I prefer 1847.
