I have an old Audio Technia ATW-R09 wireless mic system.
The mic itself is pretty horrible for harp and not pleasent
for vocals to my mind, very toppy, but the transmit/receive system works well.
Would it be feasable to remove the transmit components from the mic and build them into a belt worn unit of some kind
thereby enabling the use of any mic connected with a short cable to the transmiter as a radio mic....or have I completely lost the plot.

Hi - first of all, your old system is no longer legal. A few years back the FCC shut down the old frequencies and allocated new ones.

Second - belt packs are a pain - you can't put the mic down and walk away from it. In my band, I do some songs where I only sing. I do others where I play sax. I don't want to hold on to the mic all the time (impossible), disconnect it (time consuming) or put it in my pocket (dorky.)

If you're in North America you can get a brand new, legal system that can be used with multiple mics, from me (a member of this forum and really good guy) - for $259. No belt pack required! Check out the Wireless Systems page on my site.

If you're not in North America I can't sell you the system, but I can still tell you what to get and how to best set it up for harp.

You're in the UK going from your accent..^
Try out a Line 6 wireless t your local store.Your mike goes to a belt pack which if ,unlike Gregs position,is no hassle really if you just playing harp.
Its Digital and foolproof to set up.
In NZ i paid $399 (NZ) about 180 pounds .One of those big London discounters will probably have it cheaper than that.
Great piece of gear.

i'm with greg on the belt pack issue. the whole point is to be untethered. i wish line 6 would make an xlr transmitter that'd plug directly into one's preferred mic, like the samson ax1.

And you can get the system I sell in the U.K. Samson just won't let me sell systems on the Euro frequencies. But if you buy what I recommend I CAN tell you exactly how to set it up for best harp results, and I can make adapters you might need to use it with both high and low impedance mics with different connectors.

Listen to Greg. I have had the old and new Samson units and love them.

I have L6 for my vocals. It is a good system at a solid price, but not ideal. The pickup pattern is enormous and I've had some minor cutting out issues. They have some potential harp-friendly units at a good price, but the Samson stuff is just so good!!!

Thanks for the advice Greg. I don't know about frequency changes, here in the U.K. weve only recently moved on from two tin cans and a bit of string. I hope they don't start messing about here as I have an old SM58 radio mic I use for vocals that is really nice. Totally different from the usual SM58 to my ears.

An' I ain't got no accent, it's anyone who lives more than 20 miles from London whats got an accent!!

Jehosaphat, I'll have a look at the line 6. Thanks
