I saw/heard lots of wonderful playing at HCH. Todd's performance was the only one that really, deeply touched me - I had a tear in my eye. The video unfortunately can't fully convey the power of his playing.

Wow. Wow. No seriously: wow.

Really a recognizable style there. Couple of very distinct licks. Nice.

What's the positions? Starts of in 2nd and then goes of to 12th or something? Have got no harps handy..

@FreeWilly: 2 pos all way through, I´d say. He switches harp at one point round 3 min.
Also, I guess he´s using an alt. tuning, 7B one step down?

@Martin- yeah Todd uses an alternate tuning. I'm not sure if there is a confirmed name for the tuning but I think TPT (Todd Parrott Tuning) works well. 7d is tuned a half step down (same note as 6ob).

Just catching up since my return from HCH....

I am truly humbled by the very kind comments here. I appreciate all of you, my friends in the harp community, very much!

The harps used on this song were a GM in Db with the flattened 7 draw, and a GM in F#, standard richter tuning. Both played in 2nd position. These days, I use the flattened 7 draw tuning more for the bendability on the 7 blow than anything else. I use the 7 draw note as a note to bounce off of.

This key change is a common one used in gospel and country tunes. A key change like this can often give a song a nice lift.

HCH was an incredibly great event. I'm honored to have been a part of it. It was also nice to meet some of my friends from MBH.

Thanks again for the kind words from all of you.

Todd Parrott is my new harp hero. Seriously, the guy is just incredible. He was also a great teacher as well. Thanks Todd for the lessons at HCH and the inspiration to try some new things! I've got a country tuned harp on the way...

What a wonderful piece of harmonica music! TB is temporarily shelved in favour of TP woodshedding for this "amazing" rendition. The change of key was an inspiration and an education! Thank you Todd

oh yea.

Establish the melody.

Respect the melody.

Play with the melody.

Interject flights of fancy within the melody.

Play phrases that are as long as a breath.

Pause between phrases.

Start slowly and build excitement towards the climax.

End with a perfect landing on both feet without wavering.

A textbook example of how to do it right in a world where so many blow through the melody quickly and without any thought given in order to start soloing like crazy.

INCREDIBLE! You're up there Todd!

I was waiting for a sacrificial harp to tune down 7d, but...... (where's my nice GM with that Sjoeberg comb.....? I'm headed for the shed!)

@Rubes: Use Blu Tack (or poster putty for the US version).

Same as putting a blob of solder on the reed, but totally reversible.

Brendan Power came up with this idea and it works a charm.

Todd Parrott, you are one of the true marvels of the diatonica harmonica. You have an absolutely perfect, creamy rich tone that you control like of the finest jazz tenor and alto saxophone players, your flourishes on the melody are tasty, tactful and placed with the right amount of certitude and delicacy, and your phrasing during your solos is the sweet combination of musically logical and emotionally satisfying. Thank you for your particular kind of harmonica brilliance.
