Woke to sad news this morning. Another member of the immortal Blues Brothers Band passed on yesterday morning. Donald "Duck" Dunn died in his sleep in Tokyo after playing a double header at The Blue Note with Steve Cropper and Eddie Floyd.

One of the coolest and most influential bass players of all time IMHO, and let's face it, he probably had the best one-liner of the whole movie.

"We had a band powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline!"

I'm no fan of the Blues Brothers thing, but Duck Dunn was always one of my favorite bass players and he and Al Jackson Jr. on drums made one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time.

Sad news.

say what you like about Aykroyd and Belushi, but Cropper and Dunn are the real deal - not blues, but dripping with soul.

Cropper and Dunn along with Al Jackson Jr. played behind most of the classic Albert King recordings on Stax and there' some great stuff they layed down behind Albert in those sessions.

Dunn also played on Chess'/Muddy's "Fathers & Sons" album.

But to the world at large, being the bass player on "Green Onions" is surely enough to cement legendary status several times over :-) One of, if not "the", most iconic pop instrumentals, period.

Not to mention Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'", Nicks and Petty's "Stop Dragging My Heart Around", and Otis Redding's "Respect" and "I Can't Turn You Loose".

The man was a rock whatever and whenever he played. This is a terrible loss.

It'd be nice to believe that he and Al Jackson Jr. are finally reunited.

Time is tight.

Duck Dunn and the rest of Booker T and the MGs backed Albert King on the classic "Born Under a Bad Sign" album and they were the house band for Stax Records in Memphis.

Actually, I am fairly certain Duck did not play the studio hit version of Green Onions, although he is on many live recordings. Anyone remember who did it? Anyway, he was one of the best imo. RIP

Michael, my bad, you are absolutely right! Dunn joined the band after Green Onions was released, Lewis Steinberg played bass & got a co-writer's credit on the original.

I'd love to find our bassist a Lakland Duck Dunn Signature bass. Pretty sweet machines. P-Bass body with a Jazz Bass neck.
