I used to write short stories, but now it's mostly just lyrics. Hmm, I can drive a standard and although I really only draw stick figures, I draw really good stick figures. When I was younger I could karate kick over my head. I can spin a stick on the end of my fingers. I've done comedy once or twice at open mics and gotten decent response. I can do moderately long division in my head (not the kind that gets you on TV specials. If someone already has a calculator out they will probably get it faster than me, but if they have to take the calculator out I'll probably beat them.) I'm really more of an 8 of all trades- not quite as good as a jack of all trades, but still able to do a bit of a lot of things.
I'm a professional writer, two West Virginia Press Association awards. Would love to see one of your tales someone, Nate. I can cast a fly rod in the dark, this is actually kind of a rare skill. I'm actually pretty good at fly casting... I came up with some original casting techniques. I can make flint tools and longbows. I ustacould read Middle English fluently, if I refreshed my skills, I mightcould again. Same with German. I used to be really good at knots, I invented one. I'm a good shot with a good rifle. Pretty good photographer. Used to do a lot of landscapes. I lloved water. Play other instruments. Not a skill, but I'm a narcoleptic. That's pretty rare. Oh yes, I make beer.
-Avid gourmet cook, and had a catering business for a few years on the side. The only reason I don't think i'd want to be a chef is becuase I'd constantly have to make the same thing over and over-I like to mix it up.
-I sing.
-I'm fairly mechanically inclined-I was jet engine mechanic for 21 years on F-15 fighter jets.
-I can order beer and ask where the bathroom is is 6 languages, at least. If that doesn't work, I'm fairly good at pointing at stuff and playing charades.
-Marine structural designer/checker/3d amigo
-I'm also a gardening geek-I probably should have been a horitculurist/botanist. I build my own self-watering containers.
-Occasionally, I break out one of my many dual-control stunt kites.
-I'm pretty darn good at darts.
-I draw artistically, not just drafting-wise(and most of that is CAD and 3-d, anymore). I've sidelined it for many years, but I hope to get back to it soon.
-I also brew beer(or have), but I hope to get back into that after my move to Texas soon.
I am long overdue for a visit to the shooting range. I'm pretty handy with a rifle or pistol, and I think I could shoot a broad on the side of a barn if I had to. ---------- Todd L. Greene
In the late 80s/early 90s I played pocket billiards at the semi-pro level. I had a chance to take it farther, but it was either stay home, work my day job, and raise my kids or be away from home a lot with hit and miss on the money. Glad I stayed home.
My wife says my passion for harp is like it was for a pool que back then. Pro pool players and pro harp players are similar in that it is not a high dollar glamour sport. Very few players make more than a factory job would pay. Like blues, it pays better and has a better fan base in Europe and Asia.
Great thread! I would love to hear what some of the other hobbies/skills you guys have.
I completed a couple of marathons but they were both pretty slow...of course that was 30 lbs. ago.

- I am a narcissist (is that a skill?) (I am replying to this thread, aren’t I?) - I can send and receive Morse code at over 30 words per minute (useless) - I can drink beer made by others and really appreciate it (not useless) - I can build a tube amp from a pile of parts and a schematic - I can save you in a high place (not *that* kind of save). I was in Mountain Search and Rescue for many years - I can rappel Aussie style (look it up?) - I can fix a Model 15 Teletype (useless). You know – one of those old black teletypes that used to sit in the back of the newsroom making that clattering noise? - I can fly an airplane during takeoff. (Usually I can land it too ;-) - I can fix your million watt television transmitter (really – I can!) - I can grin really wide while riding my Norton motorcycle
But I can’t play harmonica... yet.
@Todd - now I am really sorry we did not have a chance to meet for lunch while I was in NOLA. Maybe next time - or in Texas
--Big Game Spearfishing --Adventure Motorcycle Runs --Knifemaking --Flyfishing --Distillation of spirits --Guns
I suppose you could add horses, but that's really my wife's thing that I simply appreciate.
Skills:
--Modesty prevents me from boasting......you'll have to ask my wife --I'm the Contracting Change Order King. Reputation amongst various agencies, cities, municipalities and the Feds that I will take every penny that's not nailed to the floor.

I can count in yan-tan-tethera (Lincolnshire dialect). It's an old English sheep counting system used by Shepherds and farmers. I especially like 13 ("Tethera Dik") and 15 ("Bumfit"). I guess that probably explains the schoolboy humour element of why I learned this.
I can also say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
Totally useless knowledge - I guess I could be a North Wales sheep farmer.
No welly gags please.

I play funk, soul and disco guitar in my band, but I may be moving over to keys again. I haven't played keys in my band for 10 years, but I want to as it will give me a chance to sneak in some harp. I've never played harp in a band aside from a couple of songs. My dream would be to play full time harp with the horn section.
Long time martial artist. It's actualy what I'm best at. ISA Certified Arborist and run a tree climbing academy. Also a pretty decent bicycle mechanic. ---------- You Tube = goshinjk
@tod I love dual line stunt kite flying, I wish I was good at it. I have 4-5, one is a competition kite handmade in UK that I paid 475$. I still can't belive that I spent that much on a kite. ---------- Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. Isaac Asimov
I need more hobbies. Let's see. . . I'm pretty good at the science/pharmaceutical development thing. I am pretty good at mixing tasty drinks. I am decent at some video games. I put a lot of energy into the harmonica/singing/performing thing and my work. Fronting a band on harp/vocal was the only thing I ever really dreamed of doing. I'm learning to make pies. . . That's all I can think of. ---------- 12gagedan's YouTube Channel
Mmm lets see.. Marital Arts DIY (need the wife to confirm both of those)
Pencil drawing (not drawing them, using them) Use to win heaps of beer money playing Pool/Snooker. (and then lose it playing Darts) And like .it seems, a few others here..my home brew is a killer. (doesn't taste the best..but it IS a killer) Other than that i think i might have wasted my life..^
I used to be rather good at snapshoting lunar craters, mounts and faults through a telescope, ditto mundane snapshots of the sun (with filters) and some phenomena linked to celestial mechanics. I'll soon open an "off topic" related to next Venus's transit in front of the sun. That's let's say macroscopic world, but microscopic world is sometimes really stunning, notably scrutinizing the living-in-a-drop micro organisms. No particular skills to achieve this, only feeling the good odds to interesting takings. I can say that sometimes I've been scared of what I saw...

@ATL- I'm on QRZ.com, too. I dunno if you read Monitoring Times Magazine, but I've been a regular in there lately. I had the Stealth SWL antennas in the April issue, "three generations tackle a smokey Heathkit" in May issue and I've got a feature story in the June issue. I might have done the cover photo for the June issue, I haven't seen it. ---------- David Elk River Harmonicas
I used to do alot of skateboarding and was kickboxing for a few years but now i mainly like Mountain biking and getting Tattooed, those are my favorite pastimes now:o) ----------
@Bronzie, yup, but when i shape up and inform my enemy i'm a bb in karma sutra, i'm sure hoping it bluffs them away, otherwise i'm in deep touble here.....lol.
@Stan, looks like I stole Jehosaphat's "marital arts" spoonerism (it was by accident I swear).
I have played soccer for over 40 years and continue. Also like mountain biking, snorkelling (have done it with sharks a few times, no cage, very intense), Japanese game of "go" aka "igo". Have worked as a Japanese-English translator, investment analyst, copywriter, editor, soccer coach, coffin maker, barista (before the word was invented), English teacher, and make-up artist (not in that order). My only mechanical skill is putting all the parts in upside down every time.
I forgot to mention gardening. Here's some of my tomatoes, it's an open hierloom variety my grandpa raised for 40 years. He got the seeds from a cousin, who got this seeds from the old lady in Roane County. So there's been many, many tomato generations since this seed was in a catalog.
wife and i are big into little fishing- bream has been a passion the past couple or 3 years, on ultra light tackle. this year we have seen at least several hundred come in on our hooks. we catch fish when nobody else does so i think we're pretty good with it. these are some of the most beautiful and colorful freshwater fish, and ounce for ounce the hardest fighters. we've caught up to about 2 pounders often.
i must brag on Jolene, she was a career journalist until retiring and is not deep into a collaborative effort book with two of her pals from school days. she and they are nearing completion on the first in series of mystery novels geared to young teen girls. i think it's a very worth while effort!
i have written lyrics for many years now and Jolene has joined me in this. we then work up the original material and play our own songs. out second cd was all original and was chosen locally to compete in Memphis at IBC last february, and placed between 30th and 6th place world wide.
i used to ride a bicycle every place. long time ago. i hope though that we will end up with an airstream trailer in the next few years so we can travel, see some of the country, and play a gig here and there. the whole rv enthusiast thing is appealing in its way.
along with the fishing deal, i also am hoping a small boat is in the future.
do home projects count? i've done a few of them like rewiring lamps, installing accordion doors, hanging a pot rack, cool paint treatments, outlet and switch covers, etc.
i am growing a few habanero pepper plants this season, i am a big fan of pretty hot sauce and cooking with hot peppers although wife has no interest in eating stuff that can blow one's face off. i do have some fans at work however. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
