I was working on the Web site today... virtually nothing is left of the old pre 2010 Web site. But I did come across this. It's a picture of a youth baseball team, 9-10 year olds, Jason and Brady sponsored back in 2009. They were the New Bloods. They were the New Bloods. That's me, coach at the far right. My son, David II, is beside me. That was a great year.

I think it is great that Jason sponsored a team too. My comment was about you and your son. I was being sarcastic. I could easily have picked him out of a line-up of 100 kids. The boy is the spittin' image of you. There's no denying him on your part.

That's for sure. Just put some whiskers on that boy and you couldn't tell the difference.

I'm trying to remember the names of my two Little League teams. One was Delmar Answering Service. The other was something Auto Parts. I never could get over flinching away from the baseball. I played a ton of baseball with tennis balls after school though. Sometimes we'd shave the fuzz off of one section to make the ball curve more.

I had to work to keep from flinching. I was a catcher every single year I played and I got hit A LOT! I never could catch the ball on a swing and a miss. I never could. The swing of the bat would interupt my focus or something... once the bat crossed the plate, I lost track of the ball entirely. This meant two things. No. 1: I got hit A LOT! You'd think that catcher's gear keeps your from getting hurt, but no, you can still get beaten up. Worse is when you get a fastball on the inside of the leg. Getting dinged in the cup ain't fun either, but it would be a lot worse if it wasn't there.
No. 2 I dropped quite a few third strikes. That was a pain in the ass, when you've just had a ball hit you, you gotta stop it in the dirt and throw it to first... or in Little League, you could usually tag the runner out, cause usually he's walking back to the dugout.

My most memorable team:
Southern Supply/Dutch Boy Paints, Cross Lanes Little League, 1987, David Waterfill, coach. We got cheese pizza at Husson's every time we won. We played our asses off, because if we lost, we had to go straight home and we didn't get to eat any pizza. We were undefeated except this one team that beat us every time we played them. They were some hot dog place or something, they wore black uniforms and were complete dicks - the coach was the worst of all. So we went through the playoffs, got all the way to the championship and who do we meet? This hot dog place. We were all depressed, cause these guys had always killed us and they were rubbing our noses in it... when they play Little League ball, kids don't really keep track of the score. I mean they'll ask what the score is, then they forget. Our kids played pretty much that total game thinking we were behind and were going to lose.
Then I catch the last strike on the last out. I'm standing there holding the ball and them I'm like "wait a minute, we won" coach runs out on the field, we all start jumping and hugging, the hot dog team was walking off the field all drag-assy... and we were going to get some pizza. I think we got to have pepperoni on it that time.
It was totally like the Bad News Bears.

By the way, despite my coaching, Jason's team made it to the semifinals. They got "Victory Frosty's" at Wendy's when they won. We had a girl on the team. She was one of our best players. That's something we didn't have when I was a kid, we would have thought that was awesome I'm sure. Little David did. He was very sweet on our young lady player.

I played two years of Little League and two years of Youth Soccer. The first year of both the team was good and I was terrible. It flip flopped for both. My second Little League team only won one game.

I never did get over the flinching with baseballs, but I used to play goalie in floor hockey all the time. I'd get all bruised up. I think I was really just worried about getting hit in the face. With a helmet on with a face guard I was fine. I miss playing sports.
