Yo Peeps-- I posted to Slidemeister about this, even tho AJ is trying to promote chromatic he suffers my insistence that short harp is worthwhile. As I post there, I recently repaired a Bushman Soul's Voice High A for Bill Barrett, and decided to make one of my hybrid high harps for my own purposes. Then I forgot to take it to the gig--oh well, tomorrow is another day (it's actually here right now, I woke up at 4 am!) So here is the post, let me know if I am violating rules about cross posting. http://www.slidemeister.com/forums/index.php?topic=6820.msg80565 I don't really like high harps, this one is made from a D, it's still pretty high!

Until about 10-15 years ago, you could always order a Hohner Piccolo/Vest Pocket Harp in both High A as well as High G, and I used to own both of those until they both got stolen. For doing SBWII stuff, those were fun and also for doing the "no hands" tricks. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

i used to own a few of those piccolo/vest pocket harps!
like a lot of my harps, they just vanished one day.
oh well, when it comes right down to it i don't like anything over F# or below G. i almost never use my low F and low F#. the normal F# has one job only-John Mayals "Room to Move" if requested. i dig my Echo Vamper in low C. and my high G just sits around for the time being. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.

@MP i almost never use my low F
Why not, at jams or in band situation using a low F for rythmic playing and then soloing in normal F major is effective.
Same as high G, I used it tonight, a lot of delta blues guitarists use an open D tuning, ideal for contrast

I think it depends on the sound of the band Nick.
I find Low F to be right in the same tonal range as the sounds the guitarist and keys player favour (especially drawbar organ sounds).
Low F just never cuts through the mix for me - and I play bright tuned Lee Oskars - I much prefer regular F. In fact I think it's my new favourite key! OBs are out of the box on an F harp.
Curiously though, my High G gets almost no use. Odd that.
I'm curious to hear the sound of a high A. Can anyone provide any pointers to youtube clips?

MrVerylongusername: If you look up a concert w/ Norton Buffalo from the mid ´70s you´ll get at least one instance of playing a high A. Sorry I can´t be more specific -- but you should have no trouble finding it on the Tube. (I think he is wearing green, baggy pants and a white shirt -- it was the´70´s, remember.) /Martin

The extra two notes on the bottom of this tuning are | C# e | F# g# | Plenty of bends there--E arpeggio on draw holes 1-4, and you can draw bend the b7 on hole 4.

Hi Nick,
when i first got a low F i used it a lot; most likely because it was a novelty and at the time i was using it for Gm dorian- not as shrill as a normal F for that key. for the key of C, i prefer C in first, Bb in third, and the normal F in second- depending on the tune in question. i just like the timbre of those keys for some reason. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.

I was under the impression that the Vest Pocket/Piccolo in Bb was a high Bb also, as the G and A were not labeled as "high," just G and A, so when I bought a Bb, I was disappointed to find that it was a regular Bb. But, no worries... I just retuned a high A Seydel and made myself a high Bb.
