Carried over from the Adler thread. Here's Dom Sgro, brother Tony Sgro on chord. I wish I could embed that "Night on Witch Mountain" they did. Tony's chord solo there was the most Badass thing ever played on a chord harmonica. This audio quality does not capture Dom's tone, but it's still pretty awesome. Music begins about 3 minutes in. Herb Shriner's pretty awesome too. They "won" all those cigarettes on the show, but none of them smoked. Tony told me once "If you didn't smoke when you got in there, you'd probably start by the end of the show."
That's pretty cool. I always get so wrapped up in the whole one harmonica blues stuff that I forget about those old groups and that whole style (not to say there aren't new groups or anything). I have enough on my hands with a diatonic- I would be lost in the sauce with that bass chord harp. haha ---------- Brad
David: If I'm correct, these guys were at the 2009 Buckeye Harmonica Festival. They were Great. What a show they put on . ---------- And I Thank You !! KCz Backwoodz Bluz
I think it's time for me to call Time Warner about my internet connection. It's been off and on and slow for weeks. Watching videos is a painful exercise in stop motion/stop audio. :(
I have a fast connection and it was stop motion for me too - even if I let it pre-load a good way. I think it is something to do with this specific vid - but the music played smoothly. What a gas. Can't wait to see these guys at SPAH! ---------- /Greg
One interesting comment I got on Youtube was their hair being a tad long. I'll ask them about that. These guys are still around and a wealth of info. If you see them at SPAH or wherever, talk to these guys, ask them stuff. Back in the day, they were rock stars. They've got a lot of great stories. ---------- David Elk River Harmonicas
I was actually surprised when the host finally joined in and could actually play...I thought it was going to be something more along the lines of this:
The host was Herb Shriner. He was one of those guys so talented, it could have made his way in a number of areas and he was born at the absolutely perfect time to do what he did. He wore his Indiana birthright even more than I wear my West Virginia one. He was a humorist much like and as talented as Will Rogers and he was just as funny as Rogers. He was a popular radio personality and TV show host. That group he was talking about in high school was a QUINTET at first, then he was leading an octet. He started spinning yarns onstage to eat some time to get a break from playing on stage when his lip was sore. Turned out, he was funny as hell. Herb was a professional player in addition to all this radio and TV stuff. He had a harmonica orchestra that Cham Ber Huang played in back in the 1950s. He like to collect antique cars also... and he and his wife were killed in one of them, an old Studebaker, in 1970 when the brakes failed. He had a son named for Will (for Will Rogers), Will is a standup commedian, directed TV shows and stuff, he directed Fraiser and Everybody Knows Raymond, etc. I dunno how many episodes he did. He had another son named Kin - he and will were twins. Kin played on General Hospital for 40 years. Herb had his own line of harmonicas that he sold, they were called "The Hoosier Boy" harmonicas. You see them pop up on Ebay quite often. Herb didn't have much to do with his kids getting into show business, I don't think. They were teens when he died and I know Kin was selling brushes before he started on General Hospital.
Here's Kin on General Hospital, he's the blonde headed guy:
