This has to be my all time favourite Doors song, it has a sense of tension and menace about it which is compelling.
I've tried some vocals on this one with some harp improv over a backing track (I was attempting edgy harp and hope it doesn't come across as irritating!)
I've pieced some photos together on the vid to set the scene.
No warbles? Yeah, this is one of my favorites, too. When you get to the part "his brain is squirmin' like a toad," the pics made me grin a little. I can't imagine why, though. Maybe it was the look on the toad's face. I didn't think the harp was at all irritating. I thought it comported nicely with the mood of the song. Nice tip of the hat to Jim Morrison with the final pic.
@FMWoodeye Thanks for listening and your comments.
The line "his brain is squirmin' like a toad" is disturbing but genious (and is one of my favourites) and you kind of know what it means! ---------- Grey Owl YouTube Grey Owl Abstract Photos
@greyowlphotoart....Oh, I agree. I love the line. Just the pic sequence at that time made be inexplicably grin. I think the toad resembles my high school government teacher.
I've given this a shot a few times and I can't get it to sound right. I think Diggs posted a version (w/o lyrics) a while back. Our singer really wants to cover this.
The only way i can get this tune to sound right is if I use 2 harps--D in 3rd position for most of the tune and G in 3rd position on the IV chord. What harp are you using?

Thanks very much to all for the generous feedback. I was uncertain about what improv. to put to this with the chord progression, so it is gratifying to know that it worked ok.
@hvyi The original song is Em and the backing track I obtained was the same key and I used an A harp to play along.
I decided to change the key of the song for the vocals and shifted it up a semi-tone with Nero wave editor to Fm and used a Bb Sp20 harp on the recording.
Anyway camera at the ready, I've had a word with both my cats but to tell you the truth they weren't really up for eating the 'squirming toad' thing indicating they got frothy mouth last time they tried and weren't keen on repeating the experience. They were wondering if tuna would be a suitable replacement. ---------- Grey Owl YouTube Grey Owl Abstract Photos
