John Mayer may be popular but don't fault him for that. I've seen him a few times on TV - the guy is a MONSTER musician in every sense of the word. Congratulations to him. ---------- /Greg
I remember back in the 90's I was driving past a concert, and I swear to God - There were thousands upon thousands of women lined up to get in and thinking what the hell is going on there. Well, it turns out John Mayer was performing there in concert. I had never heard of him. Since then he has put out some really great Cd's and he seems to love tearin into some killer blues with a vengence!
There are at least a half dozen guitar players in Chicago (not counting Buddy Guy of course) with better chops than Mr. Mayer: Carlos Johnson, Lurrie Bell, and Ronnie Baker Brooks come to mind, and maybe a few people I have seen on Jam Nights in the clubs. Granted, the name blues guitarists I mentioned are older and more experienced. But I saw him at Crossroads Festival a couple of years ago, and quite frankly he was OK, not much more.
That's not to say I am dissing the fact that he plays the blues. More power to him for that. But let's not get carried away and call him some sort of phenom.

In the future, I -as well as Many caucasians- would appreciate you Not calling us "white-boys."
I encounter that term used in negative contexts far too much in my life to be tolerant of it. I am sure you meant nothing by it. I could just never see myself calling an African American a "black-boy" and not sound racist.
The term seems to be too much like saying the N-word nowadays.

"But let's not get carried away and call him some sort of phenom. "
I missed the post where anyone called him that. But still, based on one live performance he's disqualified? I saw Clapton live just once, and he put me to sleep. I saw Chuck Berry live just once, and he sucked.
Chucks character was great in the Cadillac Records movie, that's a shame the Beach Boys stole his groove...Mayer reminds me of a mixture between Clapton and James Taylor, how does someone become that friggin talented, his last album is excellent.
capjn: I don't think so. He is a guitar hero, and as so I guess he prefers to steal the show, and the sighs of the girls.
John is a monster musician. Maybe not a great Blues guitar player, but he can play a lot of styles. He is a very good composer and is quite creative. Some of his songs are harmonically fairly complex for "pop" songs.
He really knows what he is doing.
I respect him.
---------- With some latin flavour for you, chico!! :P

@atty1chgo I had company during my nap. Everybody can have a bad day. If he'd played with that kind of passion we wouldn't have been so bored, but it just wasn't happening. This was right after "Slowhand" came out, and he had Yvonne Elliman touring with him. It was sterile and lifeless.
This clip would have been several months before I saw him, though I don't remember a harp player. But the energy level here is about as exciting as it got through the whole concert that I saw:
