Here's a great example of modern Chicago blues. Muddy and Little Walter have been left somewhere back behind the speeding train--although this energized, funk-and-big-band-jazz-propelled version wouldn't hve been possible without their earlier, mellower version. And that's exactly as it should be. No reverence towards the old stuff here:
Are you serious? I don't like this too much. Band sounds messy, singing is poor and the harmonica playing isn't that convincing either. Too trebly and not a very strong tone. Seems out of tune, even? Flat?
I like the suit though!
It's almost like they had to play the classic, but meddled with it until everything that was once good about, had disappeared.
i agree sort of with free willy.. i think it is mostly because the guitar is too high in the mix and he just is not quite with the beat so it makes it sound too loose.. but still like idea of playing it this way
I like it, and reckon the guy on keys held his own amongst that flock of 'eagles'! ButFreeWilly I'm not too keen on the suit! ;~} Good post work Frank! ---------- One of Rubes's bands, DadsinSpace-MySpace
Many years ago when I was first starting out, Junior Wells was one of my heroes. When I later got onto his style of playing I didn't look up to him so much. I think he's great on feel without getting too technical. It certainly works for him. One funny occasion I saw him here in Australia and he had to tell the keyboard player that they were playing in the key of 'C'. Great performer and probably now known as 'Senior Wells'.
The Ann Cole original featured some awesome NYC session musicians in guitarist Mickey Baker, saxman Sam "The Man" Taylor, and drummer Panama Francis. There's a bit more of a jump flavor to it.
Junior always wore the baddest threads of any bluesman, hands down that I've ever seen. My favorite thing on the video of Junior doing Mojo is the drummer and he GROOVES!!! ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
The drummer on the track at Legends is Willie "The Touch" Hayes. He's worked with a ton of people out of Chicago. The last time that I saw him, he was playing with Lurrie Bell.
Junior was awesome. I miss him. He died too young. He had soul.
Man, that clip of him singing "What'd I Say" is just amazing... and not a harp in sight... Just goes to show what a phenomenal frontman he was... Mesmerizing... ---------- == I S A A C ==
