I been wondering this for awhile,And I know my problem would be helped out alot by not smoking,But Im sure im not the only person out there that has had these problems,Im trying to work up 12 songs for a jam the 21st,well Im running though them and on a few songs either during my vocals or harp playing,Im getting a scatching feeling and the urge to clear my throat, and sometimes its bad,Its spring now ,and I have bad sinus problems, that sometimes make me puke,No im not to worried about puking during a song(cross my fingers),but sometimes i might try a quick cough in between parts and try not to get off time;-)Has anyone had such exsperieces, what are some quick solutions,I read that you could gargle warm salt water befor a show and it would clear you up,I know a damn good bass player that, has to puke befor each show cause he gets nervous and ,hes done alot of shows,Im thinking a shot of good whiskey befor singing to ,lets see relax the throat;-)

If you use a neti, use distiller water. City water supplies can still carry amoebas that can attack your brain. There have been at least to deaths recently because of brain eating amoebas.
You can accomplish the same thing by getting saline nasal spray which is much less likely to kill you.

The salt water gargle is good at the beginning of a sore throat. It helps to kill germs in the throat.

(a neti pot is a funky pitcher you use to irrigate your sinuses. You can find ads on YouTube)

I'm going to disagree with Kingo as to getting the same results from a nasal spray. The neti will give a great flush whereas a spray cannot accomplish this.
As for infections, I haven't heard of that, but it may be true. Perhaps do as he says to be on the safe side.

if you are havbing allergy attacks and it's based in your sinuses, why not try claritin or another otc allergy remedy?
i know it can be really hard to try to sing, blow harp, and cough at the end of every other line of a song. and it just looks really bad too. stop the nasal drip starting the day before the jam or right now even. keep the sinuses clear and the cough and scratchy throat may go away.

Eating a wedge or two of lemon is a great way to clear out the excess mucus before a gig.

Hobostubs: I come for a world class line of allergy ridden folks. I am the only one in my family that can keep a pet, not on an inhaler, and not been in the ER over allergies. With that said, I suffer year round. The nasel rinse/neti are releifs for a short period (like 10 minutes for me), the allergy shots didn't work, accupuncture didn't, chiropractic didn't, prescription and over the counter drugs didn't, local honey didn't, diet changes didn't either. I have tried every know treatment to man including blue algae.

My throat is in constant drip and the sinus's are almost always hurting to the point my teeth hurt in spring and fall (pollens and ragweed). If you listen to many of my songs you will hear me clearing my throat alot between singing. Hot water, lemon, and bit of honey will clear it for a little like the neti pot and naseal rinse bottle (made in Santa Rosa Ca where I use to live). I have learned to live with these stinking allergies. I had to leave harmonicollege early due to them. I did find one cure from a russian doctor in Austin. The problem is I can't find a doctor since that will administer it. It is an eastern culture cure that has been around for centuries but is not for the faint of heart here in the West. Contact me offline if anyone is interested. Life ain't never easy but it sure is fun! Walter

As you stated smoking is a known culprit to screw a lot of things up...I was always amazed when I would see performers you smoke and wonder how they do it, assuming it would be torture trying to sing or play harp as a smoker?

Hum...
Laxative's good for the cough, you know?
You take some, and you don't cough anymore, 'cause you don't dare coughing anymore.

ok, ok I know...

I used to use saline spray a lot. There are hypo and hyper tonic solutions and I get them mixed up. The one dries your nose out, the other makes it run, but is great for sore throats. Now I use a prescription nasal spray and a decongestant. I've always had bad allergies.

The way you describe it though, as a scratching feeling, could be tension in your vocal cords. Back when I was in school I developed a problem where I'd start gagging when I was singing. I didn't have the money for a full upper G.I. workup, but my doctor happened to have a singer with exactly the same symptoms. He gave me a Xanax and the problem went away. (A muscle relaxant probably would have worked too.) I'd strained my voice, which had sent the muscles in my throat into spasm, which in turn made singing more of a strain on my voice, which led to more spasms and so on and so on. My throat problems were pretty severe (I used to turn my stereo 3/4's of the way up and sing loud grunge). I was getting the gagging even just talking. Once my voice got over being inflamed though I just had to adjust my singing technique a bit and I didn't need the Xanax anymore.

Just doing better warm-ups vocally and letting the microphone add the growl instead of trying to overdo it with my voice keeps things working pretty good right now. Watch a couple videos on proper singing technique and breath support and see if that helps.
