This might be something to consider if you've wanted to try stainless-steel reeds, but not been ready to invest in an 1847. If you've got a brass-reed Seydel harp, worn out or blown out, Elk River can resurrect that instrument into a stainless-steel-reed harmonica. We use your coverplates, comb and screws to build a new instrument with stainless-steel reeds.
You don't have to keep the same key, either, you can choose anywhere from Low C to regular F. All these steel-reed harmonicas have long-slot reed configurations, which is great for upgrading keys D and higher with short-slot brass reeds.
This not only applies to Seydel models, but a couple of others as well, such as the Weltmeister Blackbird (model with screws, not drift pins) and Bushman Soul's Voice. My main D is a steelified Weltmeister Blackbird.

Recessed-reedplate upgrades are $37.
Those models include: Seydel Session, Weltmeister Blackbird, Bushman Soul's Voice.

Traditional models are $47.
Those models include: Seydel Solist Pro, Seydel Favorite (and Black).

Hiya Dave That's a great deal! I have a question, though, that I've never been able to fully find an answer for. I know that the recessed reedplates don't have a groove for the front of the coverplate, so a lot of people don't like to put them on non-recessed combs (eg., putting an aftermarket wood comb on, say, a session steel), but I do know that you CAN make a harp that way (I have several Spec 20's that I put wood combs on on). My question is if there is any real reason why Session Steel reedplates will NOT fit on a Solist Pro comb (with Solist Pro covers)? Basically, I'm asking if the slot spacing and the bolt holes will all line up, and the only difference is the presence of the groove in the front of the reedplates? Or is it the case that they are totally different? I'm mainly asking out of curiosity, and for future reference...

Thanks!

~Isaac

Isaac, you have found your answer. yes, it will work. Not only does the slot spacing line up, but the screws as well. The thing you'd have to experiment with would be the coverplates, Solist Pro covers should work.

People played harmonicas for a century before that coverplate groove showed up. It should all work fine.

Not the Solist, it won't work. Although a lot of the early Solist Pros are stamped only "Solist."
The one your talking about is the one you won in the Elk River Championship a few years back? If that's it, I remember it was actual Solist. The parts aren't interchangeable with the Solist, unfortunately.

Nice! Thanks for solving that one for me, Dave! That is very, very, very, good to know! I got's a birthday coming up, and I also have a Solist Pro in A that I converted to powerbender, but also recently got one of Brandon's "own brand" powerbenders, which is also in A. Having to A powerbenders is a bit superfluous, so I might as well get some Low-C steelified reedplate action goin' on with any birthday moneys I may get, right? ;)

Sure thing! BTW, this is NOT April Fools. This is for real. It's just coincidence that it's April 1 today.

If you're upgrading a stock solist pro, you will also get an improvement in response. German silver reedplates are manufactured using better equipment, allowing much closer tolerances.

Are we supposed to trade in the old reedplates (with the brass reeds) as part of the deal? Or can we keep the old reed plates (to use for repairs, customising practice, etc.)?

No. The brass plates are yours, you can do whatever you want with them. If you want them sent back with the harp, that's absolutely fine.
