I'm not sure what you'd call this. There is at least one spot that makes me cringe and a couple technical issues, and I'm still building this piece, and it's not a very technical piece, but I still kind of like it. It's played on a Fm Natural Lee Oskar. It's a work in progress. What works, what doesn't? Be brutal. Any suggestions.
Not much bending, but it didn't fit the piece, and I know I really let the beat drop at about 1:18.
I liked it. For a work in progress it has potential. My first image as I listened was a wagon train just after dinner, I thought first of European gypsies, but as I listened I thought I could hear a bit of the old American west. Keep working with it and take it where you want it to go.
You stopped the recording right before the thunderous applause. Sounded a little like Russian folk music. Made me want to drink some vodka...but wait. I feel like that most every night. Does it have a name?
It's working name is Minor Blues, but it needs a better one. If you've got any ideas let me know. My last piece without the band was called 'Soul Surgery'.
It was actually a strange open mic. I printed up the lyrics for St. James Infirmary Blues, and then promptly left them at home. I played it without vocals, then played this. I was really worried about how St. James would go over without vocals, but everyone liked it. I was really worried that I'd screw this up, since it's not real tight structurally and I'm still experimenting, and it went over well. For my final song I did an incredibly simple call and answer thing that just uses three holes and of course, completely screwed that one up! Still I had a lot of fun.
So, so far people are hearing Russian and European, with a little Old West thrown in. That's good to know as I try to develop it more. I noticed that there was a little too much echo to hear some of the fast notes distinctly. I can talk to the sound guy and see what he suggests.
On a weirder note, I noticed that on some of the notes I couldn't decide if I was going to tongue the notes or block the air in the back of my throat, and in a couple spots I could hear that I was doing it with my tongue, but I could also hear a little grunt, timed slightly differently too. Strange percussive effect.
I think that's a great introduction or "head", It's low key >(mellow) - but very interesting...a great build up to introduce the body of the song, guess we'll have to wait till you finish it. Has a kinda of Jewish flair to it, I'd call it Matzo Ball Blues Delight?
In the higher parts my faster notes seems to bleed into each other. I think maybe on the lower notes I'm using a combination of throat and tongue to block, but on the higher notes, the sound is more forward in my mouth and I'm not doing the throat stuff, which is making the notes less distinct. I'll have to work on that.
Matzo Ball Blues Delight... that's definitely in the running!
The player thing didn't appear on your first post, but when listening to the Youtube's, I feel that's Irish music, except for the percussive sounds. If it's a work in progress, try listen to Brendan Power, he's likely one of the best Irish music harp player, and you'll see the connection.
Well I'm a bit disappointed in the cat story plot line. Here the pair had had many trials and journies to reach the evil bath tube lair and we're poised and primed for the final battle with the hose jet and all we get is a couple of dry cutsey promo pics. What a let down. :(
Bluemoose, you missed the whole subplot... there are actually 4 cats in the video! The two 'old' cats are bright orange and black. The kittens are grey and washed out orange. It's a commentary on the how today's kids aren't as bright as the previous generation! The fact that the pics didn't change in any relation to the music represents a movie maker's plight when choosing a soundtrack that will seem in sync with both the younger and older generations.
Ahhhh...so it's one of those "relationship" flicks. Gag! I was hoping for something a little more along the lines of "Mars Attacks!". MBH Webbrain - a GUI guide to Adam's Youtube vids FerretCat Webbrain - Jason Ricci's vids (by hair colour!)
