I have worked nearly my entire adult life in the photo industry. I noticed early on that many folks who bought camera gear also were into motorcycles, guns and often guitars or other music gear. I've never owned a gun but do admit to the other obsessions. I've traded cameras for bikes and have been offered guns for camera and music gear. It occurred to me today that maybe I'd prefer to recycle some of my holy grail harp stuff for another bike. Is this common?

Most of my bikes have been BMW's, they tend to suit me. But, I've always been drawn to Nortons too. The new Triumphs are definitely nice, but difficult to ride across the pond. I do still owe you for the tea though.

BMW do make really nice bikes. The Norton Commando is uber cool though. I think I might have a cup of Yorkshire tea and look at some bikes now :-)

Rick,
IT is interesting how one hobby does inspire or influence another. In our rural area, guns have always been respected and used. I'm sure that there is a skill and use of knowledge about photography that intrigues you. For Choo choo and I, we got the firearms interest when we attended the caboose's gun safety class. That and the show TOP SHOT inspired us to licenses and keep practiced.
It is also fun to do the hunt. What item might be the next thing that keeps one inspired for that hobby. Thats why pawn shopping can be addictive.

Actually I think Kingley is pulling my leg. He just wants me to buy the Triumph so he can sing "My Bonny lies over the ocean..."

I'm with Kingley on the Bonneville. Some of the coolest bikes ever made. I love American muscle cars more than any other kind of car, but when it comes to bikes, my taste lies in Britain. What I wouldn't do for an old BSA Lightning or an Indian Classic. I'd take those old girls over a Harley any day of the week.
But if I had an offer to trade a piece of my music gear for a smokepole, I'd prolly do it if the piece was right. ----------

Guilty as charged. I was learning to play Hendrix when Jimi was still playing Hendrix. I just closed up/sold off my studio and retired from photography last year. Now I photograph what I want, when and where I want. My father taught me to shoot a Remington Nylon .22 rifle when I was 6 years old. I've bought and sold more firearms over the years than most people have seen in their lifetimes, including Class III. I just ordered a S&W 627 with a 4" barrel, yesterday. When I was paying and showed my firearms license (owned one since they existed), I realized that it expires on 03/28, so it's off to the courthouse to submit my renewal application today. I blew harp when I was a lot younger and stilled believed Bob Dylan was a great singer and musician. Nerve damage in my left arm has caused severe atrophication of my tensors and finger/hand muscles, so I can't fret a guitar or operate the slide on a pistol. So, I have sold off most of my firearms and guitar gear. I still play an old Dobro® lap-style and Don Young (President, National Resophonic Guitars) is hand-hammering a hollow-square-neck Style 1 Tricone for me as we speak. I can still play the old Dobro® bottleneck style as long as my arrangement relies mostly on slide. The harp doesn't cause me any stress so it's been a pleasure to pick up and play again. I've bought half a dozen Crossharps which I'm enjoying quite a lot. John Harl and Mike Fuggazzi are collaborating on building 5 OB/OD custom Seydels for me. Always trying to make lemonade from life's lemons...

I have noticed a comonality between rifles and harmonicas. There is an expression "beware the man with only one rifle" infering that when you get to know one very well, you can put rounds right where you want them, wheras when you have a bunch of rifles for special purposes you never get to know any one of them that well.
I have been working a lot woth my C golden melody and it is becoming very familar. I am surprised at how different and less responsive to me my other harps seem now.

Hahaha! You guys are killing me. Hey Rick, maybe you should get an old '70's Honda 400/4. Super cool ride.

I ride older bikes. 1978 suzuki gs 1000, and a 1985 suzuki rg 500. The 500 feels like you have been shot out of a gun from 7k up on the tach. Lots of fun.

I do think there is a common thread between harmonicas, motorcycles, and guns. The romantic appeal of traveling light and well equipped. The crazy irony that you are going to use them one at a time but will end up encumbered with several.

RG500, not available stateside, bet it is a fun ride. I have been reading about a resurgence in 2 stroke technology. Don't be surprised if someone comes out with a 1000CC water cooled 2 stroke multi rocket next year!

For another kind of cool - I've got a pretty cherry '92 BMW K100 that runs like a sewing machine - its for sale but I haven't actually told anyone that yet. I'm asking $3800 - it has 60K miles (that's nothing for this bike), BMW hard saddle bags still keyed to the ignition key, and even a BMW cover - plus all service records since it was new. Contact me offline if interested. ---------- /Greg
