@Martin right, 'like a rollin' stone.' i tried to put it out of my head and succeeded till i read your post. :)
did you know that john popper said that dylan and neil young practically ruined harmonica playing for a generation?. i can't quote him but it's like kudzu says,'he is representing the blues-and the blues harmonica-'
now that song is stuck in my head w/ the worst harp playing imaginable. really, we should have a contest to see who can post the worst example of harp playing in history. might be fun. my vote is jagger on 'like a rollin stone' ----------

cool
Here's my entry (the "solo" starts about 1:40, but make sure you torture yourself with the whole song...there's a second solo at the end):
It's the same old story, in general people are clueless as to what good or even decent harp playing is. If you've ever been to a Springsteen show there is usually some point when he plays harp, not rack harp but hand held, now he can't play either but when this happens the crowd goes insane, It boggles the mind. I think that out of all the British rock and rollers the one who you could consider decent would be Van Morrison, If I recall he played 1st position on that tune "TB Sheets and it was pretty good, and I thought the stuff he did with John Lee Hooker was ok. I am a huge Stones fan, but in answer to the question, NAAAAAA!
re: "I agree Adam on his statement about the White House, and thought to myself when first seeing it was, what in the hell is Jagger doing there with some of the blues elite. It would have been nice to have had a true blues harp player there to represent our great instrument,"
Charlie Musselwhite was there and performed with Booker T earlier in the evening at a private event. He presented Obama with a special Seydel harmonica as well. So Obama probably knows the difference...... ---------- /Greg
@ Honkin and MP , So you and others think Alanis Morissette’s - Hand In My Pocket song sucks because of a few short harp solo's ? Do you think she should never play the harp again ? The Song was great! Her singing was great ! Her guitar player was great , All were very professional !! So it’s not Blues or maybe your cup of tea ! But It is a very good song ! And The Harmonica fit the song well !
I guess most people on here want to put down anyone that doesn’t play cross harp or tongue block or do over blows or sound like Little Walter ! Once again people are putting down professional musicians that are singers and songwriters !
When you get to her level or Neil Young’s etc etc in the business please post your videos !! I truly think it all sounded very good !! A very nice song !

Dissin' rockstars that sell millions is good fun, it's harmless to them. I prefer to read that than seeing members jumping at each other's throats for some silly reasons...
We should have threads like these at every full moon !
I like Mick's 1st position playing on Sweet Virgina, as well as his playing on Let It Bleed as others have mentioned
Perhaps one for another thread, but while I hate bad harp in a blues context, sometimes the suck-blow Dylan/Young/Ryan Adams style is appropriate. For instance I'm not sure that Heart of Gold or Call Me on Your Way Back Home would be better with more precise or skilled playing?
I totally agree with that. I like Dylan's playing, and even more Neil Young's, in the context of their songs. Their music was never about virtuosity, and wouldn't sound right with blues harp either.
actually neil youngs heart of gold is perfect. sweet virginia is perfect too. so is billy joels piano man.
also, no one has agreed w/ me that slim harpos hip shake on exile on main street is very well done.
we're just havin' a little fun at rockstars expense toddg. this keeps us from attacking eachother and i find it very therapeutic, even if is is sophmoric behaviour. :) oh a friend of mine was alanis moms boyfriend but not alanis dad. he can't play harp either and is worse on fiddle. ----------

I tried very hard to follow the young lady in the green tshirt and what she was trying to teach.....could not follow the body language with no dialogue
Don't worry groyst...she's teaching the Alanis Morissette method no verbal instruction necessary...it goes like this:
1. pick some random holes on the hamonica. 2. suck 3. pick some other random holes on the harmonica (if confused at this point, use the same holes) 4. blow 5. go to 1.
Actually, i think she's MORE musical on harp than morissette is in her video, and she's actually managing to produce some individual notes. apropros of nothing I love how the thumbnails of supposedly related videos that appears when the video is over contains a few very accomplished players.
Aaaah, the power of youtube, wanna be mentioned with great players? 1. make a vid 2. post on yt

Yep Jagger's not the most accomplished harp player. I reckon the best I've heard from him was with B.B. on the Deuces wild cut of Payin the cost to be the boss. (his solo is at the end)
However, what he does pretty well fits in musically and to the average punter doesn't seem like crap. Anyone else did it, they'd be looking for a new band, but its Jagger, and he can pull it off. ---------- Lucky Lester
i know he can as witnessed on the first copy of the Red Devils' King King cd i had. a bonus cut was Mich and the guys doing "40 days and 40 nights" and mick and lester swapping licks if i remember right.
DID he do it justice for the president and his musical peers at the white house? NOT HARDLY. i sat there in disbelief wishing i could have shoved him off that mic and shown him how to lead a pickup band and blow some sh%t UP. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
