What low harps do you guys like? Low G, low low f.

The Thunderbird seems like a great harp, but a little pricy
Seydel blues session? I can't find reviews for the super low ones.
Any easy mods that an inexperienced/thrifty harp player could do to fix the reed rattle problem on cheaper harps?

Thanks so much!

The Seydel Super Lows only come in the Favorite line which comes stock with aluminum comb and contoured plates. However, these parts are generally inter-changeable with the 1847 combs and covers if you buy the parts as components. I think Seydel has done a great job on their super Lows, but then again, I am biased.

The best mod you can do yourself on a low/super low is to re-shape the lower plate so the draw reeds have further to travel before striking. You can also slightly raise the gap of the BLOW reed which essentially makes the 1 hole less efficient so the column of air doesn't send the draw reed into full travel. You can try and put a small dimple in the lower plate and guys that do that with success are super happy with it.. Lastly, you can take a very small amount of surgical tape and put it on the draw plate. This actually reduces travel distance on the reed, but when it does strike, it deadens it a little. Not very effective, but I guess every little bit helps.

I've got a Seydel Blues Favorite LLF. I use it mostly for pedal tones and chords, although the middle octave will respond much quicker. The sound guy has to adjust the volume on the mic for me because it's not as loud as my other harps. I rattled the reeds a lot when I first got it, and the reeds are 'looser' now (easier to rattle) but I've learned how to avoid the rattle pretty much just by adjusting my breath force. Bad technique shows though much more than on regular harps.

Like I said, I've managed to get rid of rattle just with technique (at least when I use it regularly enough to stay in practice) but I've heard several people have had good success bending the cover plates out a bit at the low end to give the reed a little more room.
