Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of buying a USB 'piano' keyboard to plug into my laptop.

I want to use the keyboard to play scales, play around with notes to create riffs, melodies etc. I have no motivation to play the piano but can see the benefits of understanding the layout and having acces to the piano for practice etc.

Does anyone have any views on a good model - or any views on what spec i should aim for?

I guess i would be happy to pay up to $100.

Thanks in advance

James

For about half the price (at the cost of one less octave) there is the Akai LPK25 ( link to amazon.com that gets really excellent reviews. I've had my eye on that little puppy for a little while now, and one of these days I'll pull the trigger on it...

Here's a link to a very good video review of what it can do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtGjriY2_5Y

Here's a review of four mini keyboards, including the two already mentioned:

As Whistler said, it's a little trickier to find that price if you need full-size keys. Here's one, though:

I would heartily recommend that you hold out for key-weighted/hammer-balanced keys. The "more economical" models simply engage the circuit by using the depressed key as a switch. No feedback on weight. Very dis-satisfying. Also, try to make sure that you don't end up with a circuit limit that won't allow more than three, or four keys, or five to sound their tones together.

Cheers guys, thanks for the advice and links.

I went for the korg 37, its a bit bigger but sounds like it's got the spec (probably more than i'll need but at least I can grow into it, i mean as a player not a person - I'm 41 and don't expect to grow much more!!!).

It's being delivered early next week.

Regards james
