I recently purchased a Shure PE585 mic and was surprised to find it has almost double the volume of my JT30. Is this normal or do I have a problem with the JT30?

If your JT30 has a crystal element in it (MC151, MC101), then I'd suspect the crystal is dying. I wouldn't have thought that you would notice such a big difference in volume otherwise.

Agree with Kingley. The 585 is not a particular hot mic, and crystals either die abruptly or just get weaker with age.

I am a ceramic, and crystal guy. All of my elements are plenty strong. I also have a couple of 585s and a pe533. Although the 585s are not very hot sounding they do seem to me to be very feedback resistant at high volume and they have huge bottom end response, although they are a little clean sounding until you get them cranking real good, hell Cotton used one for quite a while. Check out Ron Sunshine's videos, one of the 585 demos is one of the best sounding ones he does, IMHO.

"and crystals either die abruptly or just get weaker with age." That sums up life too. :) (Or does that need a frowny face?)
