I've returned to harps after about 15 years and I'm getting sores on my lips from what I think is the coverplate grooves on both my Manji and Crossover, you know the sharp edges at the corner. This is probably due to my poor technique but I'm still searching for my ideal instrument. Thinking of trying a Sydel 1847 next, either Classic or Silver but don't want to have the same issue with an uncomfortable harp. So are the Sydel's of the same classic design with a coverplate groove? If they are can anyone suggest another comfortable harp to try?

Seydel Session Steel uses the recessed comb design simlar to LO & Sp20. The sores might be the comb and not the groove, though. 1847 uses a polymer comb which is pretty nice.

Try an 1847,you won't regret it.

I Rarely get sore lips when using Either the 1847 or the Solist Pro,both very comfortable to play.

I recommend taking the harp apart and take a piece fine 0000 steel wool and use it to smooth out all those sharp edges of the stamped out reed plates and cover plates. And a little extra rubbing where the cover plate groove comes to the edge of the reed plate.

Just becareful so that you don't snag a reed !

Smoothing out those sharp edges always helps !

The other thing to remember is to clean your covers. I've got a Seydel Blues Favorite, which is, for the feel in my hand, my favorite harp, but if I let gunk build up on the covers it dries up and chops up my lips. Of the more popular harps I like SP20's and Lee Oskars- pretty well rounded corners and a recessed reed plate. Of course, you can sand down rough edges on harps if your favorite model is an issue.

Seydels for me feel like a million bucks be it session steel, 1847 all combs or favorite.

The session steels feel so much nicer right out of the box than so many other harps I've tried. The favorites feel great as well.

The session steel is IMO the best bang for the buck of seydels line. If you like how a Special 20 feels. These feel like those but even more comfortable. I have full facial hair and I never catch it on any of my seydels. I look at a lee Oskar or a good bit of other harps and I can feel ripping my face off
