I enjoy the camaraderie of harp players but the competition deal can generate some serious bs. I sat in tonight and it went really well, the crowd really enjoyed the 3 tunes I played -except the harp player. He played the last 2 tunes of the night and left like someone stole his girlfriend. I did a whole heap of proper protocol polite things that go with sitting in. And, we knew each other because I let him sit in a year ago with a band I was playing in.
Oh well. I'm not sure I have any questions as much as needed to vent.
Thanks

Life's too short to be that thin-skinned. Are you supposed to sit in and play badly on purpose?? I hope he got stitches for that cut on his head.

I wasn't the only one that noticed it. Again, oh well.
If there's a topic here I would think it's about
competition and playing music.

As long as the degree of competition is overtly friendly with no intended malice, where's the harm? But it seems your insinuating that in the situation you've described the vibe was less then harmonious, leaving you feeling frustrated and angry...

Someone got blown off by Jon Popper coming out of a show once. It made enough news in the harmonica world that it got back to him. The answer? He had to pee.
(Who was that? It's a forum story.)

Just hit him on Facebook and ask him polite and concerned if you stepped on some toes. Say you noticed he took off in a hurry. Ask if it was something you did. If you did do something, he can let you know, or when he thinks about it he'll realize he's blowing it all out of proportion. Either way you can clear the air. If it was something else he can take a load off your mind.

...venting is cool.

I know what you mean.

It happens to me ALL THE TIME!

We need to take care, and lose the "monkey" we're carrying.

Too bad for him.

I would look at it as a compliment, too.

And simply empathize with his level of evolution.

Some people have fragile egos. Maybe you played better than him and he can't deal with it. That's his problem and not yours.
