Been playing a year. Noob-inter without overblows but can do all the bends 1-6. Got a busker event up in July. AG says now is the time to look towards the hot season:
Anyone suggest a small resume of busker tunes (poss with lyrics) to add to my pocketbook of 'no tunes so far'?

Will you be all by yourself, or will you have a guitar or bass player with you?

Love Me Do is a crowd pleaser. So is In The Pines. both can be done solo. If you are playing with a guitar player anything by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon etc should be easy enough on the fly. Don't be afraid to busk originals and unknown songs. Be brave and take risks or stay home.

good luck.

Depends on your style. When the Saints Go Marching In can work well if you work up some fancy parts. If you grab a natural minor harp St. James Infirmary lays out real nice. So does Summertime. Like Tembeck said, Love me do is catchy. I'm partial to In the Pines too. Don't be afraid to mix some modern pop tunes in. I saw a bluegrass band do an awesome version of 'Oops I did it Again' and there is a great acoustic version of 'Hey Ya'. Even if they don't have harp you can turn them into harp songs.

(And welcome aboard to the two new posters.)

IMHO, the general passerby responds to songs that have one or more of the following three elements: familarity, groove and "sexiness". E.g., You've Got to Move, Hoochie Coochie Man, John Lee Hooker style stuff, Sonny Boy II (9 Below Zero, Let Me Explain), train chugs, Key to the Highway, Trouble in Mind, Rock Me, Crossroads, Shortnin' Bread, Dust My Broom, Chitlins Con Carne. Don't be shy! You're playing harmonica, after all. It ain't meant to be quiet.

Bronzewailer has a great list and philosophy there. Most of all - play what makes YOU groove. Play your favorites and give them the attention and energy that pleases you. People will catch your groove because you are bringing them something you love to play. Requests are fine and all, but I would rather have people requesting that cool song I was playing the other day....

You are free to do as you like (provided no one runs you off). That is the great thing about busking.

My busking has been brought indoors for the winter, as the coffee shop where I have busked outside before, asked if I would come inside. At least I won't freeze my fingers off.
