Since questions about intonation a temperment keep coing up, I thought I'd just post Pat Missin's Ramblings on the general topic of Just Intonation, ratios and prime limits in a iframe for easy reference. This article, the best I've ever seen on harmonica intonation, is just one of his Tuning and the Harmonica articles.

You can see why ET took over.
Imagine having to tune the piano for every
piece. They used to do that for harpsichord.
The farther from the original key the worse it
sounded so you had to retune for the key of the piece.

Just have 12 pianos, each tuned to a different key and problem solved.

We carry keyed instruments around, well, why not every other musician too? What violinist wouldn't want an excuse to own 12 Strads?

My hurt brains now. I think it's important to understand the basic theory more than the math, unless you are designing tunings. Is there anything Pat Missin doesn't know? I'm sure there is a term for it that I just don't have in my brain at the moment, but there is a phenomena where you learn a little bit of something more advanced and it helps you solidify the less advanced theories floating around in your head, even if the advanced stuff doesn't stick. :)

yeh, have you ever had a gig and was told not to worry about taking your piano and finding the one at the hall is tuned to something a little off of concert pitch?

This is just one of many wonderful and educational articles from Pat Missin. I love all of his stuff. I use it as a reference when I can't explian to customers what exactly I mean. This was also very helpful when I was learning to tune. It totally changed my approach to tuning as well as playing.

A violinist would never have the need for another isntrument. The violin, much like the voice, has a virtually unlimited amount of notes it can play. Two violinists could play just intervals in any key at any time without changing instruments.
