Hey y'all

First of all, Adam thanks for approving me and letting me become part of this online community. And thanks for the free-bee lessons on YouTube.

I've played music off and on for most my life. Mostly drums and guitar in metal and outlaw/old timey country bands. I guess you could call me a hellbilly or a heavy metal hick.

But I got my first harp about a month ago (Big River "C" and recently a Marine Band "A"). I usually practice practically every night for 2-5 hours. Even on days I don't practice I screw around on my "C". I'm currently working on gaining an accurate and precise control on my bends, and tongue blocking. I'm also working on my scales and speed. Trying to do eighth note and triplet runs. I do a lot of exercises but I also "jam out" to songs I like to try a mimic the harp or other instruments.

I plan on busking with a friend of mine this summer (hence the long practice time). But I guess I'll see how that goes as time gets closer.

not a great user name imho, but welcome from England anyway old chap :-)

You are doing well, remember it's not how many years you have been playing, but how many hours in those years..

Hello from Scotland, your name does hint at a death metal background.

Hey all thanks for the welcome.

My name does kinda reflect what most think when they see me. I am a tattooed and pierced biker freak. And I do look homeless on account of how I dress. Someone in a bar I worked at once called me scum to be insulting and I took it as a compliment. Hell, it made me proud. And yes Stan I can be a wild one, but since becoming a father I have toned it down. Now instead of living fast and hard and trying to leave a "good looking" young corpse I've decided to live slow and hard and leave an old leathery corpse. But despite my name and crude appearance I'm probably one of the most courteous and well mannered people you'll meet, that is if you can get passed me cussing like a drunk pirate.

Side-note : I got to play along with a banjo and gutbucket player last night. It was hillbilly beautiful.

Hey Buz

I'm currently located in Medford, Oregon USA.
I call the Northern California Coast home though.
Although I have been looking into moving to Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

Welcome, Mr. Scum. I am pretty new here, too, and have been well tolerated so far. Your practice regimen sounds pretty comprehensive. I would advise you to get some face-to-face instruction at some point. I have found it invaluable. You might want to try it sooner than later so that you can nip some bad habits in the bud, get an evaluation and set some goals. Adam lists some instructors on this site. Personally, I have had a number of Skype lessons with Ronnie Shellist and have found him to be focused and succinct. Ronnie is mostly into the Chicago blues style. In any event, check out Adam's list. Maybe there's someone local to you.

Buz - I don't get down to NorCal as often as I like even though I'm practically on the border. I make it down there a few times a year. I love the Humboldt and Mendocino Counties for many reasons. If I stay in the states I plan on going there.

Woodeye - Mr. Scum? Sounds all proper and shit. :-D I have looked on the net and asked around some of the music shops to try and find an old harp pro. But I have yet to have success. I guess next place to look is the bars and other places of ill repute. I have thought about doing the skype lessons. If I can't find someone in my area I may do that. Either way I'll have to go sit out by the bars to earn the cash to fund my lessons.

Dude, I would be happy to work with you on Skype or speaker phone on some of the basics, bends, blues scale and such. After you have built a foundation, you can move on to a more capable teacher. Email me at phezanthawk@wowway.com if you want to set up a session or two. No charge, of course.

Thanks Woodeye. I may have to take advantage of that offer here in the near future. Much appreciated.
