How ironic from someone with the handle 'ReedSqueal' (although I have outgrown the squeal part now)

One of my all time favorite (daily player) -customized- MB harps got damaged. I was in the process of cleaning, I removed the cover plates, then attempting to loosen the reed plate screws and one was a bit tight. My flat blade jewelers screwdriver slipped and blasted through *BOTH* reed plates on slot 3.
Dammit, dammit, dammit.

One of the reeds was bent out like an old tuna can lid that had been hastily opened. The other was sprung with a gap big enough for a truck to fit through.

I was able to smooth and bend them back close, but one of the reeds has a distinct crease.

So 3 draw and 3 blow make a harmonica-like noise, but nothing close to what it should be. One of them even hits and vibrates/rings on the reedplate. I assume that is the reed with the crease.

Any customizers out there that can attempt a repair? Can a reed be replaced? Or should I just chalk this one up to "note to self, don't do THAT again"

I am still fuming about this, even days after the fact. I have cleaned my harps dozens & dozens of times, and have never done anything like that. Wife wants to know why she keeps hearing my sitting at my desk still spewing errant profanities.

Mark Prados, a member on the forum and hohner harp repair tech does real nice work. You can contact him at
markprados@aol.com. He's a great guy, and he'll tell you if he can help you or not. And yes, reeds can be replaced.

There is a good video by Brendan Power on replacing reeds. I know it's on Suzuki Harps but it shows the theory. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kChMKU7LEVo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
