people are always asking me where to get tools to replace individual reeds and my first answer is always David Payne at elkriverhamonicas.com

using rivets is a pain so if you are new to this screws and nuts are far easier to use. ( MBH member 'jim' has an excellent video using Seydel tools to replace a reed).
i think the Seydel toolkit from Dave is awesome.
everything in it is top shelf pro gear- the screwdrivers, gauges, rivet remover, drill, tap, screws and nuts, etc etc.

yesterday i tuned two harps useing a tool david put together a while back. it looks like a mini dremel w/ a wall wart hard wired to it. you could use it to clean your teeth but it works much better for tuning reeds. i have no idea what it's called.
one thing that's cool about it is you can tune without accidently lowering your reeds gap or messing up its' profile.
don't get me wrong, i love my files but just may tune full time with this puppy.

check his site out. lots of harp related goodies there. i'm buying some key stickers from him too.

But the mini-dremel is very nice... I was searching for something like that.

me and friend ordered 2 toolkits and the dremel about 4 years ago. he (my friend)didn't use the dremel- he was afraid of it- and gave it to me last week to see if i liked it.

i like. i didn't see the dremel on his site. where is dave? haven't heard from him in a while.

Regarding screws vs rivets...don't the nuts stick off the blow reeds and the screw head keep the draw reedplate from being flat?

I ususally use rivets, but have used the harponline method...same pieces. I think harpwrench used to do it that way to.

on MB types you can use screws on the draw plate. just don't use the nut and insert the screw from the opposite direction. then clip the excess screw that is protruding flush with your plate. make sure your clippers are strong and sharp w/ no bevel on the blades.

or, as harpwrench himself suggested to me in a past thread here on MBH. "cut a small relief in the comb". i've tried his suggestion and it works fine. maybe his is a better suggestion.

i'm fine with rivets or screws.

the point is i'm plugging dave -and jim too- both have good tools for sale.

File it off - if you leave the screw heads, you can't add valves later.

I usually do the first one (no nut from the top). I have a really nice snip so I have to do almost no flat sanding when done.

However, I am always so-so on how the nut looks on the blow plate on a non-recessed comb. It isn't a big deal, and it doesn't seem to impact playability, and some even do that from the start - but I am weird like that.

mike, are you using nuts and bolts from micro-mark or similar?
if so, these are way bigger than the german silver Seydel nuts and bolts and look pretty funky even though they are 080 or 090.
i wouldn't like the look of those in the blow plate either. i don't think it's wierd. it looks huge!
the Seydels are the size of the B-RAD screws and nuts.

i found this out when a guy messed up his 7 draw on his B-rad adjusting it and gave it to me to fix.
