I just talked to Deak Harp. He really recommends a tube amp with a fat bottom end and a good reverb to it to get that Mississippi twang. He himself uses an old Gibson Falcon, but obviously that's not all that portable. I'd prolly say a Roland Microcube would be the best way to go, or maybe one of the Danelectro mini-amps like the Honeytone or the Hodad 1 with a small battery powered reverb pedal.
