I just have to share this with you guys. A couple of days ago, I went to a blues gig as a member of the audience. I knew the band well, they have a killer guitar player and I thought I was in for a treat, BUT they had a guest harp player who was awful on so many different levels. He had five licks for 15 songs, a very thin tone, sloppy technique and he was the loudest member of the band, I couldn't hear the guitar and bass, only the drums. I felt embarrased (isn't that strange?). A harp player attends a gig which is ruined by a harp player, now, that's irony.

Oh well. Sometimes all you can do is put in the ear plugs and give them an evil glare. :)

I appreciate the frustration. Your post makes me feel a little better for my internal angst during a recent event I witnessed. I think I'm pretty darn understanding but when the same ~5 licks are played randomly over every song without, seemingly, ANY regard for the structure of the song, it's not much fun -for me anyway. The crowd still clapped. This guy was on a big time stage with some great people. Oh well.

I'm sorry, I left out the most important one. He was out of the groove on almost every song, it was an anarchy of sound. As for the audience, some of them left the club after a few songs, some of them didn't pay attention and drank and laughed and couple of people liked it, but those people were the friends of the harp player :) Don't get me wrong, a player can have five licks and still sound very good, as long as he changes the groove, has good tone and respectable technique.
