I met Roy towards the end of his career. He invited me to join his band. I was so excited but once I learned how theory based he was I faded. His place in NYC was like a museum with pictures everywhere. He and his wife were old school class. At the same time I met louisiana red. Red invited me to move in with him and there was no talk of theory and it was blues, which is where I really was heading, so I moved in with him. Roy was an incredible musician. Wow, that's a great story, Walter. You make yourself sound old there (lol), but not really, because Smeck lived to be 94 (and he was born in 1900)! ----------

I met him around 1979. There were so many great oldtimers like him still around. It seems today there is a void, at least for me. He was a cool guy. Very humble. His wife would serve tea when you came with al the china plate/cup affair. I learned a lot about how to present music listening to him. His lap steel really hit me. Walter, could we fix that with a void warranty? :)
Sad thing about life is every day there are fewer old timers relative to wherever you are standing on the timeline. If you step out and look at it though, there are always new youngsters heading towards being old timers themselves. That's the key- keep a steady flow of youngsters flowing through and you'll get lots of new old timers, eventually. :)
Well, not wanting to get too serious, but drug overdoses have probably had the biggest effect on old-timer numbers! Although, having said that, drugs of one kind or another have been around for 100s of years. ----------

Talking of oldtimers, Lou Reed was on Jools Holland last night with Metallica performing a track from their new CD Lulu (after the Wedekind character). I was totally split: half of me hoped they might have something interesting to say, the other half just found it tedious rehashed grunge. ----------

Andrew: this is what happens to successful musicians. they are forever encapsulated in their hit sound era. If they leave it, they almost certainly lose their money ride-aka fan base. A true artist is one that grows with their life and never stays stuck in the same box unless that box continues to inspire them. Most big money performers have learned to be inspired by money more than art. I have been around lots of big name acts and it never ceased to amaze me how their gig was money driven. It was more a job than an art. Commercial art it is called. Money is a very tempting thing for most. ---------- walter tore's spontobeat - a real one man band and over 1 million spontaneously created songs and growing.
