New to playing and wanting to upgrade parts on harps. I am looking at getting a Hohner MS series harp like a Blues Harp. I was wondering if the reeds from the more expensive harps in the MS series can go in the Blues Harp? I see there different sizes. Thank you for your time.

They can, but the reeds in all the different models are the same except for the Blue Midnight which are "Chicago Tuned"

You can put MS reeds in 0,90mm , or in 1,O5mm or MEISTERKLASSE reedplates .I don't like MEISTERKLASSE reedplates ,i feel they are too thick and strong , so the harp is harder to bend .If you want to upgrade a BLUES HARP , see for a custom woodcomb ( HETRICK or BLUEMOONHARMONICAS) Custom woodcomb+MSreedplates+MEISTERKLASSE coverplates = fine harp .

chicago tuning? i used to have a tenor banjo and i used chicago tuning also a tenor guitar, but harmonica. i remember when this was discussed several months ago. i tried to find a good explanation of that tuning and they all fell short. they are probably there i just couldn't find a good one.

jiceblues,
too thick and too strong a reedplate? when you said the harp was too hard to bend i thought "that's a good joke". now i think you meant the reeds are to hard to bend. yes? most everyone i've talked with about reed plates want the thicker ones when they can get them on the (MS)

I've always been a staunch advocate of the MS series. I have a full set of blues harps. I originally got into them because it seemed the more economical way to go. Replace your reeds for 25 instead of buying a whole new harp for 35. But then a silly factor presented itself...Big Rivers cost less than a set of the same reed plates they use. AND THEN, Hohner began selling replacement plates for SP20's which costed less than a set of MS plates, (I'm guessing simply because the MS plate sets have extra screws and the SP20 sets don't.)

In a harp-nutshell, I still love the Blues Harp. Great sound and easy to play. The Big River has lost some appeal with me because I've had several that have been non-responsive in certain holes until you hit a specific amount of air on the blow or the draw. The Blue Midnight both looks and sounds fantastic with its Butterfield-esque tuning, and the C harp I have only just recently blew on me after almost a year of playing on it. But I'm rebuilding my 20's now that it's possible to do. So I'm prolly gonna wind up being a mixed player.

its difficult to find a stock harp that is JI tuned and hohner makes them available with the blue midnight JI tuned harps have a richer sound and is what I prefer

I'm doing the same thing as Hawkeye. I have a full set of MS series harps with plastic combs and Blues Harp covers. I have another set of Big Rivers. I can tell the difference in quality of the MS replacement reed plates and the Big River reed plates. I'll play these until they wear out.

I've also picked up common keys of Special 20's, since they now sell replacement reed plates for those, too. I may switch.

jiceblues,
thanks for screaming at me for asking a simple question. it is not unusual for someone to place a tongue in cheek statement and i really did not know ...that's why i asked.

i have looked at several spots on the net today and still don't find an good discription of the chicago style tuning. all i read is from the vaults of hohner...but then it says it's a customized tuning.

o.k.
