Okay, last night I finally got the chance to give my new mic an honest tryout. I nabbed it on eBay for a steal. It's an Ampex Model 1101. These were made as tape recorder/dictation machine mics in the late sixties and early seventies. Very art deco if you ask me. Took it out to an open jam last night with the 'Zoo. I was very impressed. Very warm tone to it, and the shape of the mic makes it incredibly easy to play harp with. It's also made of die cast metal, so it's pretty heavy for its size. Should a brawl break out wherever you're playing, you could hold the mic in your hand to land a punch, and you'd probably be the instigator of some extensive dental work. ;-)

Two drawbacks: I've been informed by two different rodders that the only place you can refit the wired in connection is on the side of the mic, where it currently resides. An XLR or 5/8" in the BOTTOM of the mic is not really doable because the screw that holds the two pieces of the mic body goes directly up through the bottom plate and clamps the body tight. Also, as expected, no volume control. This IS doable, but it'll take some work, unless I wanna play through a volume pedal, an idea with which I have toyed. ----------
