Do any of y'all have a Sonny Jr. 4x10 and what tubes are you running in the preamp slots? I'm still having a slight problem getting as much grit as I'd like w/o feedback. any info appreciated.

Just curious, cause I'm not all that familiar with Sonny Jr's either...

Is the 410 an older model from SJ? I noticed they dont have it listed in their current lineup on the website.

Yep, it's an older Sonny Jr. They discontinued it.

Are you just running a 12AX7 right now? I get a pretty good amount of grit with that in my 'Zoo.

Have you tried contacting Sonny (aka Gary) directly to see what he recommends? My understanding is that his support is outstanding, even if you bought the amp second had from someone else.

Sonny recommends a 12AT7 in the first preamp slot.
For more breakup at lower volumes,he recommends a
12AY7 in the first slot-but calling Sonny is always an option as well.

That's the way it is set up right now.
I'd still like to tame it a bit and get the grit.

Tell me what the current tube setup is from left to right.

Gritsncatfish, you have missed out a tube, the SJ410 has 3 tubes in the preamp & PI.

If you want more grit than than Sonny's suggestion/stock set up, you will have to concede that feedback will occur earlier on the dial, but don't pay too much attention to that, if you get the tone you want & feedback occurs at "2" or "3" the amp may still be loud enough to gig with?

I'd start with 5751 or even 12AX7 in the most RH position (looking at the back of the amp), likewise in the left most slot & use a lower mu tube in the middle, like 12AY7?

What rectifier are you running? There should be the rectifier, two power tubes ,and three smaller tubes from left to right. I need to know the complete tube line up from left to right-

A post from forum member Cisco from 2010-

Sonny's amps uses 3 preamp tubes: 12AX7 for the input, 12AU7 for the tone controls, and a 12AU7 for the phase inverter. The first tube can be swapped out for a 5751 which is what I do for my SuperSonny 410 so I get more control over the sound. Sonny likes using the 12AX7 or 5751 in the first position so that you can drive the signal hard for some preamp distortion and then drops the gain to 19% in the next two stages to control feedback issues. This allows you to get a good crunchy tone before you even start driving the power tubes hard.

The 12AT7 is not my favorite tube for tone generation. My understanding is it is dissimilar to the other tubes in the 12A?7 family. The 12AT7 was used mostly as a driver for high frequency devices in old TV sets. I dislike its tone and never use it. There are better choices out there if you need to lower your gain. I'd suggest a 5751 tube. It sounds warmer to my ear.

Thanks a lot for the advice everyone. I'm not really a tube swapping kinda guy. But I realize that's probably going to be the next step to get the sound I want. I've mainly been using a Seymour Duncan twin tube box straight into the PA or a Victoria tweed amp. I need to get some 5751's.

What model is the Victoria tweed amp & what tubes did you use in that? Preamp tubes are easy to change, it's no big deal, even guitarists do it from time to time (even Mark Baier recommends certain swaps for the Victorias).

Definitely - 12AU in V2 and V3. 12AX or 5751 in V1. I'm not a big 12AT fan either.

Victoria 5112 and the tubes are: 1-5Y3WGTA, 1-6V6GT, 1-12AX7. It's stock, hasn't been touched. I normally use a stock shure 520DX.
I've actually had really good luck with this Duncan for rehearsal or quiet gigs. http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/stompboxes/sfx03_twin_tube/

I'm familiar with the 5112, factory recommended tube subs are 5V4 for the rectifier (5R4 will also work) & 5751 for the 12AX7...not that you SHOULD change those tubes, ultimately what sounds best IS best. If Mark Baier was too worried about the slightly abstract concept of a "stock" amp the 5112 would never have been born. The circuit is very simple and it is tolerant of many tube subs for the 12AX7...it's worth trying a few options, as with any amp.

I've played the Victoria 5112. It has a very lush sound. Beautiful overtones.

I went with whatever was in the amp when I bought it from Greg. 12AX7 in V1; 12AU7 in V2 and something unmarked in V3. I suspect it is a 12AU7 in V3. I can crank it way up before feedback sets in.

It's got huge fat tone that's deeper than the Grand Canyon. When its cranked up, it sounds absolutely killer.
