I love the sound of blues harp but I rarely feel blue when playing (especially when all of those sounds start coming together!). This is something that has been bugging me since I started - is it possible to play good blues harp without actually feeling blue?

IMO, the thing is that you start out feeling blue but then you blow the blues away. Put the feeling into the music and you get a real nice venting. Cliché? Yes, but true (for me) nonetheless.

It's funny, when I'm depressed I play happy stuff to cheer myself up. When I'm happy I play sad stuff. Maybe it's a little like whistling through the graveyard. Keeping sorrow in the back of your mind wards off the bad mojo. If you ever get so happy that you can't play the blues, you know the blues are right around the corner. :)

For some, playing the blues is about the subject of being blue, not necessarily the direct expression of feeling blue in that moment.
Being blue is not always the best condition for playing the blues - or any music for that matter. You can be so blue that you don't even want to play or hear music.
